Grading the 2015 Draft

It’s hard to argue against the OP.

Despite people’s feelings, that draft yielded 1 starter and 2 back ups.

Terrible! Nothing beats the 2009 draft though when it comes to horrendous.

You know your in trouble when a THIRD STRING T.E is the best of the lot

Round Pick # Overall Name Position College
3 5 69 Jason Williams Linebacker Western Illinois
3 11 75 Robert Brewster Offensive Tackle Ball State
4 1 101 Stephen McGee Quarterback Texas A&M
4 10 110 Victor Butler Linebacker Oregon State
4 20 120 Brandon Williams Defensive End Texas Tech
5 7 153 DeAngelo Smith Cornerback Cincinnati
5 30 166 Michael Hamlin Safety Clemson
5 36 172 David Buehler Kicker USC
6 24 197 Stephen Hodge Safety TCU
6 35 208 John Phillips Tight End Virginia
7 18 227 Mike Mickens Cornerback Cincinnati
7 20 229 Manuel Johnson Wide Receiver Oklahoma

That is some serious suck right there.

Only 2 guys left from the '14 draft now. Granted they are Martin and Lawrence so they were big hits...plus I guess you can count a 4th round pick into the equation that we will get for Hitch next year. But that's essentially 3 significant contributors form 2 drafts in a row. Makes a lot of sense as the why this team lacks depth.

Jones is a b have to remember where we got him and he will be a 5 year starter for us....pretty much as expected
We expected him to be a ballhawk and make plays, not be a liability in the secondary. His best known "strength" is covering tight ends and he's not even above average at that.

But now imagine how bad it would be if we didn't have Will McClay.

The thing is, back then, how many on here would say it was a great draft...just as they said this years draft is great.....
I am not comparing them in the least...just saying some feel all drafts are great becasue of the rose colored glasses effect.

I though that draft was ok, not great but ok. But you are off on your grades of Wilson. I will give him a grade of C. Swaim could be higher, but the team and coaches get that C because of lack of playing time behind Witten.

Jones may go up if he has a good year at CB. And Gregory is an incomplete.
I absolutely hated the Gibson pick,
.

I blame the coaches for both Jones and Swaim, but none the less they are what they are. Even as a 4th round draft pick, I expect you to eventually turn into a starter, just not immediately. Wilson has never really been considered starting caliber and I doubt he ever will. That gets him his D+. If he became an average starter or even good depth, it would have been a much higher grade.

As much as I like Swaim, he hasn't done anything in the regular season and wasted a couple of the few opportunities he got. He also regressed as a blocker.

Being incomplete after 3 years as a second round draft pick, is an F.

Just because he starts 5 years means nothing. He is a 1st round draft pick. You expect more than just start 5 years at a very subpar level. He is not a good player and they still don't have any idea what to do with him because he doesn't do anything well.

This was about as bad as the 2009 draft.

Pretty average year overall in the draft that year. However two UDFAs from that year are Collins and Irving.

If we want to look at the 2014 draft

Zack Martin - A+
DeMarcus Lawrence - B+
Anthony Hitchens - C+
Devin Street - D-
Ben Gardner - F
Will Smith - F
Ahmad Dixon - F
Ken Bishop - F
Terrance Mitchell - D-

Byron Jones - C+
Randy Gregory - F
Chaz Green - F
Damien Wilson - D+
Ryan Russell - F
Mark Nzecha - F
Laurence Gibson - F
Geoff Swaim - C

Wilson probably a C given that he was a 4th rounder and now actually playing significant minutes.
Swaim a B. 7th rounder.
Rest is just a ugly bunch.

To some that might make the draft better, to me that makes it worse. It means we didn't evaluate well. Either of those players could have been drafted by other teams, particularly Collins. The fact that we went after poor players before them says a lot. Collins bluffed about not playing, but there was no guarantee we would sign him as an UDFA.

Hitchens get at least a B+ from me. We just can't afford him.

FO not very good at drafting. We need to hit on more late rounders.

Hitchens getting paid in free agency doesn't mean he is good. Laurent Robinson got paid as did Jeremy Parnell. Hitchens won't see the end of his contract.

Hitchen can start for us so IMO he's was a very good pick in the 4th round.
We wish we had Parnell last year instead of Green.
