The most refreshing thing about this Barnwell article: no Cowboys are on the list. Two recent departures make it, though...

Running Back: DeMarco Murray, Eagles
Contract Flaw: Paying for the Outlier

I wrote all about why the Murray deal was paying for an unrepeatable 2014back in March. In a year, it will be clear whether Murray was establishing a new level of performance (and health) or whether Chip Kelly bought high on a talented-if-brittle running back.

Tackle: Jermey Parnell, Jaguars
Contract Flaw: The Marginal Talent

It’s not easy to be Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell, who surely has to pay above market value to attract quality young free agents to Jacksonville’s lengthy rebuilding project. And you can understand the logic in trying to build a quality offensive line that’s designed to keep struggling young franchise quarterback Blake Bortles upright.

In Parnell, though, the Jaguars are paying a massive premium for an undrafted free agent who was Dallas’s swing tackle the past three seasons. Parnell, who suited up for just 20.9 percent of Dallas’s offensive snaps over that time frame and has just seven career starts, will have the largest cap hit of any right tackle this season at a whopping $8 million. To be fair, the deal is structured with the largest cap hits first, so the Jaguars can basically be out of the deal after two years with no dead money after paying $14.5 million. It’s still a ton of money to pay for a guy who couldn’t beat out Doug Free for regular snaps during Free’s disappointing 2012-13 run.[/quote

Last year he had Orlando Scandrick on it. I don't trust Barnwells judgment on anything.

He missed a couple last year but got the vast majority right.
I'm not sure how he did before then

The writer has probably never seen Parnell play. He is just going by the fact that he was a backup and then got a big contract.

It's the "I've never heard of this guy, so he must not be any good" mentality.

is he going off opinion or fact of what was played vs what you think and see? He stated his facts based on the field not the would of s or could ofs. So i dont think hes off base.

Carr is a bad contract.

Yes, he is.
But if you look at the list you can see why he wasn't on it.

Carr is essentially an average guy being paid like a star but this year's free agent CBs are making his dollars look reasonable.
He comes in at 7th highest paid via yearly average but he has zero guaranteed money left and may not even make it out of camp.
Since we are post June the team could cut him for 4.7m and save 3.3 this year.

A couple years a go he would have been on this list hands down.
But there;s simply been a lot of bad contracts since that are just getting started so look even worse.

just ignore all references to parnell man.

whether he has seen him play or not he makes very valid points and uses stats that have real meaning.

Wait what? You know Bill Barnwell wrote that right? This isn't some 22yr old blogger trying to make a name for himself.

Are you Barnwell fans the same ones that think Goose is a draft expert (talent evaluator)?

I clicked on his teams from the past two years. The track record is not perfect, but very good.

There is no "if". He played 7 games including both playoff games and kicked the S out of several legit NFL defenders. Bob Sturm did an in depth analysis of all sacks the Cowboys allowed in 2014 and of 40 total he blamed Parnell for 1/2 sack.

The contract might be a little high for the Cowboys, but for the Jags who still have 35M in cap space it's a good contract.

The Jags GM has just been there 2 years and their HC for 1, IIRC. Their HC built the Seahawks defense. They are legit NFL decision makers and picked Parnell. They could have made an offer to Bulaga who got slightly less, but they didn't.

Check back at mid season and we'll see how well he is performing.

Three former Cowboys. So glad business is being done differently these days.

Agreed. Last off-season the FO proved wise with the Ware/Hatcher contracts and this year with letting Murray walk. Like the restrained aggression in player acquisitions.
