Great Debate: Does Dallas need a Free or Strong Safety?

hey guys, it is evident that there Terrell Owens has created a division on this board on whether or not our hole at the safety position is of the free or strong safety variety. Some people on this board believe Hamlin can hack it at SS and would like for Dallas to acquire a ballhawking centerfielder. Others believe Hamlin is not a SS and IS our free safety and that Dallas should acquire a strong safety this offseason. The purpose of this post is to see what the general consensus is - I happen to think that this defense is missing a ballhawking free safety to take this defense to the next level. What do you think?

Well... from what I have heard, Wade says he isn't moving Hamlin regardless. So the answer to your question would be SS I would assume.

Mike lombardi was on with bad radio last week.

He said it best. There is no difference in todays nfl. Both guys have to be able to run and cover.

So we need a safety that has the range and ability to make up ground and actually cover people when they get there. Someone who can manage if he gets stuck in man to man coverage with a back or a tight end...etc..

It doesnt matter what you label them as..fs or ss. THey both need to have the same skillset.

Ken Hamlin, at SS, is asking for more runs like the Ravens game. Watch him on the first one. Watch him "attempt" a tackle on Stephen Jackson. It's pathetic. Hamlin should be embarrassed.

At this point, they need multiple safeties.

Drafting

Rashad Johnson AND

Emanuel Cook

would be great, but the offensive line must be addressed, too. Pairing those two guys together would get results.

Honestly Dallas needs a Hybrid... A guy who can play both positions well. In other words, Darren Woodson clone!

of course cause you could always need depth and if Roy38 continues to not perform then we will need some extra talent.

As long as we don't draft an obvious SS I will be okay. What I mean is a slower, run support guy. I love Kevin Ellison from USC but at 230 lbs. and a 4.7'ish 40 time, he isn't what we need. Nic Harris and Michael Hamlin are the same deal IMO. A few SS I could live with are Patrick Chung and Emanuel Cook. I'd still prefer FS types like Sean Smith, Louis Delmas, Derek Pegues, and Rashad Johnson.

We just need a ball hawking safety to make plays for us. Picking a safety that just plays well in run stopping would be dumb. That's what the front 7 is for.

is to forego signing a FS or SS this year and position ourselves to trade up in the 2010 draft and get Eric Berry out of Tennessee. He will make us forget about Roy Williams in a heartbeat. The kid has speed and will HIT you!

That would be ideal. I like your idea of taking one early and maybe a Curtis Taylor in the 5th rd. As for the argument of Hamlin I think he is best at FS. The guy is just not a good enough tackler to be the SS and to be honest, he isn't that great at FS either IMO.

I don't see how Michael Hamlin gets thrown into that group. He's a guy who isn't as physical in the box and yet lacks the range of a ball hawk. Probabaly could be just as good a FS as Ken Hamlin, but a better tackler.

I'd even go as far as saying out of all the SS's he is the best in coverege (Sean Smith is a CB and possibly a FS, not a SS). I just think Ken Hamlin is just as good in coverege as guys like Ryan Clark and Pittsburgh just won a super bowl. One big difference is obviously polomalu, but a bigger one is pittsburgh dominates vs the run.
