There is a guy, who dives with great whites, that says all they are is curious, and that they do not like to eat humans. I think it was on Natgeo a few weeks ago, he swims with them, and will punch them if they swim right at them.

I remember a guy who camped with Grizzly Bears was always hanging close by until they attacked and killed the idiot. Call it curious or hungry the end result ends up the same.

By the way here is the story of the "grizzly man"

timothy treadwell autopsy photos - American bear enthusiast, and environmentalist documentary film maker, Timothy Treadwell autopsy photos, one of Google Hot trends, who lived among the grizzly bears of Katmai National Park, Alaska to observe and film their lives, was mauled to death by a grizzly bear.

Timothy Treadwell an environmentalist documentary filmmaker and a bear enthusiast, for 13 seasons, who lived among the grizzly bears of Katmai National Park, Alaska when a tragedy struck. In 2003, He and his girlfriend, assistant physician, Amie Huguenard visited Katmai National Park in Alaska, wherein the two were attacked by a grizzly bear, killing them both at their campsite.

According to Werner Herzog documentary film in 2005, “Grizzly Man”, the film was based on the life work of Timothy Treadwell, states that Amie had a fear of bears and felt deeply uncomfortable in their presence. While, Treadwell chose to set his campsite near a salmon stream where grizzlies commonly feed in the fall.

I have studied sharks since I was a little guy. I have no problems swimming in the ocean. It's all about being smart and knowing the time of day and waters your swimming in. For example you don't really want to swim at dawn or dusk due to low visibility in the waters. Most bulls and whites are notorious for using the low visibilty for hunting purposes and thats usually the times they are feeding. One should also not splash around often attracting attention. Who goes in the water and starts being a spaz? You are just asking to have something come check you out, be it a shark or a seal or w/e.

I have swam with reef sharks and blues when diving. It helps to have eyes in the back of your head, so the buddy system is always something you want to use in the ocean.

It's just a fish. :p:

Sad to see the young man lose his life, but those South African waters are some of the worst in the world for active whites, bulls, bronze whalers cruising through and feeding.

You would be amazed at just how many sharks are near swimmers in populated areas.

Kind of a creepy situation, but definately something one can manage while swimming.

Don't be afraid to go into the water.

You should hear the tape of the Treadwell bear attack. It's gross. The feeding sounds are just awful. Imagine being eaten alive by a bear/shark while you are trying desperately to get it to stop.

There just isn't any worse way to go as far as I am concerned.

I knew it was heavy on great whites there, isn't there like a seal island or something there, they are attracted to?

Chances are it is longest fear of man getting eaten alive.

I just hope if this happens to me the bear or shark gets a bad case of the runs. :laugh2:

Yes that is where they 1st saw what became known as "Air Jaws" as these Great Whites would breach the surface becoming fully air born. Quite amazing to see a fish of that size come completely out of the water as the Great Whites do

Correct. Seal Island is probably one of the only places I would never open dive. Those are waters where you specifically cage dive only and the reason being is you are there to film the whites in the areas.

Air Jaws is insane! How a 1800-2000lb body can launch and flip like that above the water is just incredible to see. I never miss a show during Shark Week.

Amazing creatures.

I would love to go there and see those monsters.

First off IMO you're insane to go in the waters off South Africa.

But you're off the charts insane go to bodyboarding and look just like a seal there.

I am a dive master and have been diving for over 20 years. Been all around the globe, mostly in the Carib. Sea though. Seen many different types of sharks, ranging from the grey reef shard to a whale shark, only have seen a tiger 3 times and never a Great White.

I moved out here to SF over a year ago and I have had the opportunity to go diving at the Farallon Islands just off the coast. I have turned that down twice because it is a known Great White habitat with a lot of them swimming around.

The area is littered with seals, sea lions and all those other shark delicacies. I do realize it would be rare to actually get attacked (especially being under water and not on top) but I just can not shake the thought of one of those big boys taking a stab at me. I am even afraid to try to surf out here, wont get in past my knees, heh.

This is all coming from a guy (me) who is not afraid of the water at all, I'm like a fish myself but when you go to the beach here and see Great White danger postings all over the place, it does damper the mood some.

Interesting. Thank you for posting. True about your local. Some giants swimming around in those waters. You hear the occasional story of a white taking a surfer or kayaker or hitting an abalone diver, but far less than what I would feel was normal. I wonder why that is?

I'm literally terrified to swim in the ocean. I'll never do it by choice because of things like this being reported... and I do know it's not likely to happen to me. I just don't like the ocean that much. I prefer snow skiing over surfing any day.

I'm just the opposite... I'm terrified of this in the snow covered mountains...
