I have to agree, the Americans, a group of college kids beating the Russian Red Army, a team that trained year round, upsets don't get any bigger...and what made it even sweeter was it happened during the cold war.

so many of those scoffing on this were not even born when it happened. They have no idea and could not; you had to be an adult an at least aware of the world to understand.

The Russians HUMILIATED a NHL ALL STAR TEAM. Then just before the Olympics slaughtered the US Hockey team I think 10-3.

So for us to hang with them the whole game, come from behind three times and win was absolutely amazing.


I think the Amazing Mets is the only other contender and that because of just how bad they had been until 1969.

Yes I remember it very well, however I was a teenager, I was aware of the politics of the era. I remember those great battles the NHL and The Russian Red Army teams had, I remember the New Years Eve Montreal V Red Army '76...that Russian team trained year round and had the absolute best Russian hockey players available, they were far from amateurs. For group of college hockey players to do that, incredible. Now I have no doubt if Canada took it's very best and trained year round we would have been better, certainly on par with the Russians. All one has to do is look at international hockey now, the Russians get mediocre results internationally because they no longer can train the very best year round.

But that upset was the greatest upset of all time...just amazing. Ans as a Canadian I cheered for that US team, who doesn't like a good Cinderella story.
