No, but I'm sure most of the did quite a bit of drinking that Sunday. :)

hmm, sounds shady though that they cancelled services on Super Bowl Sunday

let me guess, it was a Catholic church?

No Catholic church I've ever heard of cancelled services for a football game.

How do you think churches make money?

I guarantee you the offering plate goes around at those functions.

Naaahhh... they are never passed at functions like that, only worship services...

I went to one of those a few years back and it was more of a pot luck dinner+catering sort of thing. No revenue gained for the church since it was a free event.

I think this is really stupid for the NFL to do this. It's just a dumb rule and it really boggles the mind to come up with a reason why this would violate copy right rules when it's a live showing and there's no profit being made. Just a bunch of people getting together to enjoy themselves.

I guess the illegality of it is that a public showing is not private viewing, as in a household

They're in a house - His house! :D

Have they ever thought about just not telling anyone outside of their church? I guess that wouldn't be church-like to lie, okay never mind.

I've been to a few bible, study groups, in a few different churches, and not in any one of them did they pass a collection plate around, or at luncheons

these situations, like Super Bowl parties, are informal ones, the most they ever do is open and close in prayer

i understand that and i also understand that alot of parishes are not money grubbing freaks on the other hand many are and as SP has stated this is excellent promotion for them. churches need members to survive and things like this help them get members.

i dont really care one way or antoher but i can see the NFLs point of view.

I quote:

The NFL said, however, that the copyright law on its games is long-standing and the language read at the end of each game is well known: "This telecast is copyrighted by the NFL for the private use of our audience. Any other use of this telecast or any pictures, descriptions, or accounts of the game without the NFL's consent is prohibited."

The league bans public exhibitions of its games on TV sets or screens larger than 55 inches because smaller sets limit the audience size. The section of federal copyright law giving the NFL protection over the content of its programming exempts sports bars, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said. "

In other words, exempting sports bars isn't the NFL's idea.

So how much would the NFL charge a "church" to show the game???

How does it violate their copyright law?

There are 5 rights the creator has with copyright, not just the right to make reproductions. One of them is the rights to public performance or public display. Displaying their copyrighted broadcast in a public place like a church would not be legal, unless you got a licesnse. I think there are some limits as to when it's actually a public performance. Like if only two people are watching, that would be fine.

I think Disney has made the same type of claim to their rights with daycare centers playing their movies.

:laugh2: did they all end up drinking poison so that they could ride a comet into heaven?

It is a shame that a lot of priests will be denied the gatorade cooler bath if the favored team wins.
