Greg Ellis -- Back or not?

Why? Because of the lateral movement requried of a 3-4 OLB? He seemed to be more effective -- pressure-wise -- from 3-4 OLB than 4-3. Then again, he never had Ware opposite him when he was in the 4-3.

I don't really see us switching to the 4-3, however, regardless.

but that's not an excuse to not look for an upgrade

not at all.

but folks need to realize just how hard it is to find an upgrade. the good ones, their teams do everything they can to keep them. so then you end up chasing the Marcellus Wileys of the league.

Good point....

:star:

I'd like to see him come back...at least for the preseason just to show he can still play and then retire....

I also wonder if there is a cap break for players who have to retire due to injury...if not there should be.

of course he's going to be back, he's cheap. if he has any ability at all, he'll at least be the 3rd down pass rush specialist.

good point, but I'm just for trying to go into the year w/ someone better than Ellis at ROLB

With an achilles injury he will probably lose some ability so he may have to go back to DE.

I agree completely, he will become 3rd specialist ala Jeffcoat at the end of his career. I look forward to it.

Let Ellis go. He isn't going to get faster and his money, T.O's money, and Bledsoe's money could be spent on Adalius Thomas and another player or two.

Myself, I think an Achilles injury is a career-ender, or one of those where the player comes back but is never the same.
That is my first thought. If he can make it back, great. But we are stoopid to count on him returning. A replacement needs to be found so we are covered.

So...is he back or not? This question seems to have a huge impact on what we do next offseason. It's obvious that we need someone else to get pressure. Carpenter, Singleton, Spears and Canty can't do it. We're either going to have to sign a high quality free agent (Adalius Thomas) or draft someone in the first round (Woodley, Spencer, Moses, etc.). If Greg is back, however, we can save our money and draft picks.

I just wanted to solicit some opinions on whether he'll be back or not. His achilles injury seems pretty bad, but like Bill said, it's not like he's dead.

Thoughts?

i dont understand all this infatuation with adalius. he's a prodect of that very very good defense. just like everybody was in love with hartwell last yr.

by the way adalius will be 31 by the time the season gets nderway next yr. thats right 31. spend big money on a 30 yr old. yet people always mention about ellis' age, yet he's 1 yr older then him.

1 guy who i would love in dallas is basically a ellis type. not flashy but will get u sacks. not alot but dallas doesnt need alot with ware ont the other side. but this would mean switching to the 4-3. so we might not know yet about this. but his name is adam carriker. big run stopping, decent sack getter. in the last 2 yrs 15.5 sacks. 7.25 a yr if fine with me coming from a LDE.

Adalius Thomas is much better than Ed Hartwell. You can't even make a comparison there.

Thomas will be 30 in July next year. With a free agent signing you're only looking at a 5 year contract and they're out. I think he can perform at a high level from the age of 30-35.

keep telling yourself that. that defense is just one of a kind. they could make singleton look all pro

Ellis has a good chance to be back -- I think that he won't be an every down guy but he's a good nickel pass rusher. He isn't THAT old -- he'll be 32 at the start of next season.

I think folks fail to recognize how difficult it is to find anyone to be a consistent 8 sack a year guy. Ellis isn't dominating but he is a hell of a lot better than what we've got out there right now.

My guess is that he is on the PUP for the first part of the year.

Well said. And probably on the money injury wise. I'm hoping for him being able to play. Into the year is more likely though.

I can't fathom how people can talk about the lack of pass pressure costing us dearly. With it we are a top five defensive team. Without it we're medicore to worse.

Well the loss of Ellis shows is importance to the team. Ware needs some help. Ellis was it.

I think he'll be back no later than mid year and should be able to play at or near his pass performance level.

I still think they will go after another pass rusher and LBs as well.
