I'm not advocating they extend Ellis. Just saying a 1-2 year extension could reduce the cap hit and maintain depth.

As for adding youth, I'm a big proponent of adding youth; but adding youth who can play.
Now I got it. I could live with that.

Get rid of him please....the Cowboys need to move on, most of his sacks are coverage sacks anyhow. Start Spencer and move Carp outside for depth...he was halfway decent there.

With the money saved, they can resign Burnett and draft a couple of linebackers. These types of people do nothing for the locker room...he has to go.

Gotcha. That makes more sense. I thought you were thinking he'd be playing football here in two or more years....I don't see that happening.
Never know what the future holds. I could see this year being Ellis' last year as a Cowboy. On the flip side, I could see him staying, as well. Spencer is the wildcard. He has to prove he can be healthy and take advantage when Ware is double-teamed.

by my numbers releasing Ellis would create around $ 4 million in additional cap room and releasing Roy would create around $1.6 million in additional cap room. Roy has 2 years left on his deal.

I'm not opposed to releasing Ellis if there is a credible plan around who gets his snaps and the depth to back that up.

Right now, it doesn't make much sense to me looking at our current roster and I certainly have no interest in creating a need that our draft MUST fill.

Wow.

I am shocked that everyone is so nonchalant about RELEASING two starters. At the very least, why not TRADE these guys, then the Cowboys at least get something in return.

I am not in favor of an outright release of either player, its just bad personnel managment and poor return on investment strategy.

We need to keep Ellis. God forbid Spencer gets hurt again, we'd have no depth behind him.

Additionally, Ellis is the second best pass rusher on the team from the OLB position.

Third, do we really want to overly rely on Anthony "1.5 sacks this season" Spencer this year? I'd want an insurance policy. And Ellis would provide that.

We would all be for trading them before cutting. We're just assuming that there will be no takers. RW is one season-long injury removed from the year his coverage skills were being openly mocked by opposing coaches. Ellis is way past his prime and has a pretty well deserved reputation for whining. Most clubs with any interest would rather wait and take their chances, knowing we very well might release them. It's all about leverage and teams in our situation have very little leverage -- there's no way of knowing who really wants either one of these players.

I would like for Ellis to stay -- assuming he doesn't whine this off season again.

He's been with us for 10 years now, and for most of that time he's been a consumate professional. I always felt that if he had the luxury of being in a more aggressive defense instead of Zimmers read/react schemes, then he would be just a notch below Strahan good.

As I see it, he's our third best pass rusher (Ware, Ratliff). I don't think you just throw away quality pass rushers.

I understand weighted value, and the economics of supply and demand. But there are teams out there who do not even have ONE pass rusher with the equivalent (as in production) of Ellis, e.g. the Chiefs, Broncos, Bucs, Raiders, Lions, Bears, Browns, etc.

And those are just teams off the top of my head.

Carolina may be interested in Ellis if they lose Peppers to free agency. It's possible we could get a 5th or 6th for him.

If they lose Peppers, then Cowboys have the leverage, why not a 4th? Heck package Ellis and a future draft pick to the Panthers for Peppers.

That way both teams get something from their former players.

Note: I want Cowboys to go after Myron Rolle in the 2010 draft, he should be available late on the first day (only b/c he would have spent a year out of football). Love his smarts and work ethic.

Ellis isn't making that much.

He got a lot of really underpaid years under his belt and a tiny bonus for an OLB/DE.

The issue with cutting him is what it costs to replace him.

We had to draft top 10 to get a starting OLB, so not sure we can depend on the draft for even depth. Any decent FA OLB will costs a fortune. Might be worth it to explore but it wont be about saving cap jack, just getting a younger, long term complement to Ware and that means admitting Spencer is FAIL.

If they like Spencer they'll prolly extend Ellis with a small signing bonus and 2 extra years. Lower his cap hit now and be marginal since there is no cap next in 2010.

BTW, most of the same people crying to axe Ellis are the same ones saying what he did by mid-season, that the team wasn't playing well, together or smart football.

Ellis may complain all off-season but he keeps his trap shut and plays smart football during the season.

The guy is a Rhodes Scholar who graduated from Florida State in 2 1/2 years. He plans on going to Medical School after his NFL career. He was looking at the 2nd or 3rd round this year so we may be able to get him in the 4th or 5th after a year away from football. I'd love if we drafted this guy and then had Darren Woodson come in and work with him.

i have the utmost respect for Rolle. the kid missed (only most of it because of a time change) a game to do the interview (against my alma mater). really has his head on straight and priorities in line. good for him.

Yeah, fair enough. The trick is to get 2 clubs openly interested.
