Did anyone see Greg Ellis get roached by SF QB Smith? The offensive play
went for a loss by SF in the first qtr against the Raiders. Ellis was put on
the deck. Ellis looked like he was being manhandled by many. I'm kinda glad
we got rid of him.

roached?

It's a phrase the announcers were using during the Niners/Raiders game for when a QB comes in and blasts a defensive player for a block when they're not expecting it.

Smith came around and just leveled Ellis, as he was running behind the guy on a reverse, attempting to run him down from behind, when all the sudden he got nailed by Smith for a block.

One of the announcers called that getting roached.

Thanks for clearing that up. I thought "roached" was more like stamping out a cockroach. Sorry for the confusion. The announcers of that game also noted that they didn't recall Ellis ever getting knocked down like that in his career.

its a term that doesn't get used much but, it is when you get hit and you end up on your back with legs up in the air lick a dead roach. Again it is an antiquated term.

Yep, we used to calling it dying cockroach. If one of our guys leveled someone that hard sometimes we would all yell "RAID!!!!" when they came back to the huddle. You'd even hear guys yelling it from the sidelines.

I use to get roached every day in college.. Then I got jobs where getting roached was not allowed... So it's been a very long time since I got roached..

I think the only things we ever said when I was playing was that they laid the wood or something to that effect.

In my high school we had a bat that we called The Hit Stick and anyone who got the biggest hit of the game, each week, would sign then name on it and then get to carry it around for the next week. That was always pretty cool.

I only wish that I'd had the dedication, to working out and such, and the desire to play defense back then the way I do now. I might have actually gotten that thing a few times if I had.
