Greg Ellis, LB - Dallas Cowboys

Coach Wade Phillips insists the Cowboys didn't draft Anthony Spencer to replace Ellis, the team's current outside linebacker. But it does appear they're preparing to eventually replace him. The Cowboys say Ellis, coming off a ruptured Achilles' tendon he suffered last October, will remain the starter with Spencer used as a situational pass rusher. (Jean-Jacques Taylor for SN)

Makes perfect sense. Give Spencer a chance to acclimate himself to the speed of the game and let Greg do his thing in the 3-4. If only Ellis would hop on board and stop being such a whiner then it seems to be an ideal situation. It wouldn't bother me a bit, however, to see Spencer win the job outright in TC and designate Ellis as the situational pass rusher.

That hurts my heart. It should be the other way around.

Larry Allen was cut. Ellis is basically sitting right where Allen sat last year, imo. Ellis doesn't have much to offer the Cowboys anymore(injured and really not a 3-4 LB/DE). I always liked Ellis as a player but could never get over the fact that the Cowboys passed on Moss to take him. It wouldn't surprise me to see Ellis as the final player cut this year. Ellis' History can be summed up as such: Nice guy, good player although never dominant, but fails miserably in comparison to Randy Moss.

Anyone who still carries a grudge against Ellis is not a real cowboy fan.
Moss is a punk - simple as that. Whatever else you can say about Greg Ellis, he never gave less then all he had when he was in the game. A quitter and troublemaker like Moss is someone I am GLAD will never be a cowboy.

Please don't talk bad about Moss, we have to play him again this year.

This defense needs as many pass rushers as possible. Ellis isn't going anywhere unless he doesn't fully recover from the achilles. I do want Spencer to start though.

You are hardly qualified to make that judgement.

Moss is a punk - simple as that. Whatever else you can say about Greg Ellis, he never gave less then all he had when he was in the game. A quitter and troublemaker like Moss is someone I am GLAD will never be a cowboy.

How do you know that? Greg's second half disappearing acts are epic and well-documented. Maybe he just gives up after half the season when we need him most. Maybe this situational role is the place for him. Maybe drafting Randy Moss would have spared us from years of futility. In any case, Ellis has hardly been the model citizen the past few years, as each summer he casts himself in the same movie.

So spare us the talk about how much better a teammate and person than Moss that Greg Ellis is.

Ellis had show last year that he still had plenty left in the tank, despite learning a new system. I wouldn't start digging the hole just yet. Phillips also runs a pressure defense that requires good pass rushers. Why would we cut one of the best pass rushers on the team.

As far as Moss goes, I wouldn't trade Ellis straight up for Moss.

I do agree that Ellis will give great effort. I think he is hurting himself in the eyes of fans as he questions his role with the team but when he hits the field he gives his all.

Well to be fair to Ellis, his complaints have kinda been justified. He hasn't held out and cryed for more money, he was just worried about his role on the team. First we switch to the 3-4 and he worries that he doesn't fitt he 3-4. Then we make him learn a new position after almost a decade of playing DE. Now after he's learned he new position we draft a guy in the fist round, to play that position. Atleast his whinning isn't about wanting more money, he's just concerned about his place on the team.

super punk, as usual you are full of it. If you cannot see how much better a team mate ellis is then Moss, thats your problem.

You know, you're absolutely right. It's not like Ellis has ever complained about money, or the amount of the team's "commitment" to him. Ellis is always there when the going gets tough, right? Showing up big in the second half of the season, instead of cashing it in. He's never made any asinine comments to the press about how he's being used, questioning the coaching staff's decisions, and comparing himself to a labratory test animal. I mean, it's not like Ellis is currently whining about the Cowboys drafting an eventual replacement for a 30+ year old linebacker coming off a serious injury who consistently fades down the stretch or anything.

Ellis would never do any of that, would he? Cuz he's so damn classy. Puh-leeze.

This sounds like smoke and mirrors to me.... This kind of injury is extremely hard to come back from, even if young, but Ellis is old. Ellis will not likely come back as starter but maybe situational player at best....may have to retire.

Spencer / Carpenter will need to step up.

I'm sure all of this will sort itself out in training camp and in the pre-season.

I would like to see Carpenter start inside and Spencer outside... I think they would continue to improve all year and along with Ware be the heart of the D.

We have enough high draft picks on this D that it should be great (top 5). Time for players to step up and perform.

Commentary from the 50,000-watt bastion of the supreme truth, plausiable deniability and insights that sear the brain:

I just hate it when a coach tiptoes around a subject in order to not hurt the aging veteran.
True, if Ellis is healthy, Spencer should watch and learn for a while.
But to say Spencer was not drafted to replace Ellis is an outright lie.
Spencer was picked to replace Ellis or anyone else who is too old, too expensive or too hurt. You know it, I know it, the Lions Clubs knows it.

A situational pass rusher? Sounds good to me.
But say it the way it is: Spencer is being groomed. Ellis is on his last leg(s).

It's a business and the sooner cry baby Ellis learns that the sooner he will be at peace with his situation.

I had the same injury, though not as a player or that highly paid.

Man, you don't suffer an injury like that and come back to play the next year. Takes two years to rehab and then get psychologically ready to put the same stress on that foot.
By the time old man Ellis fully recovers he will be older than . . . Hos.;)

So, take care, Ellis. Rehab it until it heal completely. And stop yer whining you little sissified cry baby.
