Anyone else think that since we got Anthony Spencer, he is going to replace Greg Ellis at OLB and play a Demarcus Ware type role and Greg Ellis is going to become our starting defensive end? I would imagine Ellis would start over Canty or Spears and there would possibly be a rotation. Thoughts?

I think Greg might get traded to Denver yet, between Denver and the Skins both seem to love Dallas's older linemen. Canty I gave a pass to last season and I have much higher expectations for this upcoming season.

Ellis cannot play DE in the 3-4. I think this shows the lack of confidence in Ellis fully recovering.

ellis would be a situational pass rusher, which he will be best at coming off the injury.

I agree, he will likely be traded. Maybe we can package him and Bradie together.

We can't stick with 2 pass rushers. That's what killed us last year.

Ellis, Ware, and Spencer will be rotated, IMO.

I don't think Ellis is going anywhere.

I hadn't thought about trading Bradie but now that I do I agree. Wonder what they would be worth as a trade anyway?

Ellis is more than likely finished.

You cannot have enough. Jimmy Johnson was genius at drafting multiple lineman and rotating them. Keep everybody fresh. Fresh legs in the 4th qtr.

There answer is no. Ellis can't play a 3-4 DE. There is no way he would start over Spears or Canty even if he could.

I am going to strongly disagree. Ellis cannot play a 3-4 DE in Parcell's system which used DLs as blocking dummies, but the Phillips' 3-4 values linemen who can get to the ball. If we had no other talent at DE, I could see Ellis starting at DE in Phillips' system.

Now all that said, I agree that there is probably not a big need for Ellis at DE. I think some of the young DEs will have breakout years this season making the point irrelevant. I do hope that Ellis is not traded or cut and I would not be suprised to see him being a DE on passing downs to great effect.

Actually, Ellis played really well in rotation the year before last as a 3-4 DE.

In the least he could be a fresh, beast DE in our Nickel.

This commentary sums it up. Do not count Ellis out...

Ellis is too small to be an every-down 3-4 end... Spencer is too much of a specimen, maybe more than D-Ware coming out of college, to let him sit in obvious passing downs. Spencer will SOOO replace whoever is opposite D-Ware. Funny, a few months ago I was concerned that we were letting go of al singleton, now we have so many talented guys I don't know if we can give all of them any reps...seriously, what are we going to do with burnett for example? I think he has the physical tools, but to do what, I have no idea in this D. I hope Wade Phillips is salivating right now at all the things he can do. Damn I am getting amped just thinking of my own stupid diabolical ideas haha.

This thread reminds me of last season when all the talk was about trading Ellis. It also reminds me of all those discussions about how badly our pass rush sucked after Ellis was injured. We need to make up our minds.

Ellis stays and starts at DE for ONE more season.

Spencer will be a pass rush specialist and will pair with Carpenter (who was a pretty beastly player himself when he was FINALLY moved outside) to provide one of the deepest and deadliest pressure tandems in the league.

Our OLB quartet will consist of Ware, Ellis, Carpenter, Spencer: first rounders on draft day and first to the QB on game day. Mark it down.

Ware, Ayodele, James (with Carpenter mixed in, maybe some burnett) Spencer.

Ayodele was really good for us in the passing game, he is bad blitzing, but he is fast enough to cover TE's, and is solid in the run game. I hope that Carpenter can take James' spot.

It takes 2 years for a young player to return from an achilles injury. Ellis will be a 3rd down situational DE pass rusher next year. He will not play in the 3-4 OLB spot, and probably will not ever again.
