Former
Carolina Panthers and
Dallas Cowboys defensive end
Greg Hardy has been arrested for possession of a controlled substance in Richardson, Texas,
according to NBC5’s Pat Doney.
TMZ has reported that the controlled substance was cocaine.
According to TMZ, Police found less than a gram of cocaine in Hardy’s possession during a routine traffic stop shortly after midnight. The arresting officers took Hardy to the Richardson City Jail in Richardson, Texas, and his bail was set at $5,000. Hardy was arraigned Monday morning and posted his own bail.
Hardy missed 15 games with the Panthers in 2014 after being placed on the commissioner’s exempt list due to a domestic violence incident with Hardy’s former girlfriend. The Cowboys knew a suspension was likely for Hardy, but signed him anyway to an incentive-heavy deal that ended up being worth about $9 million.
Hardy served a suspension over the first four games of the 2015 season for violating the league’s policy on personal conduct, and was available for 12 games with the Cowboys last season. He has been a free agent since the end of the 2015 season, when the Cowboys elected to move on from him.
There were reports that Hardy skipped meetings and had altercations with teammates in Dallas, which likely was a factor in the team’s decision to let him walk.
Hardy wasn’t particularly productive in Dallas, either, landing just six sacks in 12 games with the Cowboys last season. It was a significant drop off from Hardy’s 2013 performance, when he landed 15 sacks and a forced fumble in 16 games with Carolina.
At age 28, it’s reasonable to think Hardy might still be able to contribute to some team, but his negative locker room presence and off-the-field concerns have likely turned some teams away. This arrest certainly doesn’t help Hardy’s chances of landing with a new team anytime soon.
