08:18 AM ET 01.24 | Every little bit helps, and Trey Griffey is doing his part to save the family some money. Trey Griffey -- son of Ken Griffey Jr. and grandson of Ken Griffey -- has made a verbal commitment to play football at the University of Arizona. That's right, The Kid's kid, is old enough to play college football. Ken Griffey Jr. texted CBSSports.com with the news Monday night, joking that the scholarship will save him a little dough. The youngest Griffey is a 6-foot-2, 190-pound wide receiver that set records at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando this past season. Griffey caught 74 passes for 970 yards this past season, his only season at Dr. Phillips, both school records.

Making me feel old. Nevermind Jr, I remember Sr playing for the Reds like it was yesterday.

Griffey Jr probably my favorite player ever.

Never seen a swing that smooth.

Pure effortless power.

I hear you.

Bench, Perez, Morgan, Concepcion, Driessen, Rose, Geronimo, Foster were all starters in 74 but Griffy Sr. was a bench player when he came up in 74. He had actually come up in 73 but was up and down that year, I think he only played in 25 games in the majors. 74 was the year he came up and stayed up. In 75, Dan Driessen was moved from 3B to the Bench, Rose was moved from LF to 3B, Foster moved From RF to LF and Griffy became the starter in RF. Seems like that was only yesterday to me but that was almost 40 years ago.

Wow.

Prettiest swing there has ever been. He is bigger in person than he looks on TV by quite a bit. I used to run into him now and then when he played for the Mariners and they came to Tucson for a Spring Training tilt.

One game in A-Rod's rookie season I sat right behind the Mariners dugout and swapped jokes with Lou Pinella all game long. He asked me if I was a pitching coach because he needed a good one. He was sitting right next to his. A great character.

When Griffey was in the on deck circle he was timing his swing to the pitches in the live game. He took one real nice hack at the imaginary ball and I told Lou, "Best swing in baseball." Lou replied, "I always get a little moist when I see it."

Very excited to see his son play here.

That sounds like something Lou would say.

I grew up in the NW and was pretty bummed to see Griffey go to Cincy.

I really think if he had stayed in Seattle he may have avoided some of those injuries and would be hot on the trail of the all-time HR right now, if he hadn't already broken it. I don't know how you avoid the injuries he had but he was pretty healthy before leaving Seattle. Had only really missed a big chunk of time once or twice before leaving and then he just couldn't stay healthy.

I tell ya what, seeing how often players are hurt these days I don't think anyone will come close to breaking Cal Ripken's record. I don't think you really grasp an appreciation for that record until you get a little age.

Always has and always will be my favorite. It's a shame this guy never played for the Rangers. That would have just been perfect.
