"Well, we couldn't cover anybody for four weeks," Zimmer added. "Teams were spreading it out on us, and we were attempting to stay in base coverage."

Why? After a long pause, Zimmer said, "I don't have an answer for that."

While I'm glad that Zimmer is gone, what i got from this quote was that Parcells made him play that base coverage but he didnt want to throw a HOF coach under the bus because he knew he would look bad so he said "i dont have an answer for that." thats just IMO...

Thats what I took from it too. I hate how stubborn BP is.

Ummm, gee, if I weren't so "ignorant", I might take this for an insult.

P.S. You might want to look up the meaning of the word "anonymous" there ace, 'cus as even as "ignorant" as I am, I'm pretty sure you're misusing it in this instance. ;)
By the way, one meaning of the term "ignorant" is to "lack knowledge."

My post stated that you ignore my other posts, making you ignorant of them (you lacked knowledge of their content). Many people take the term ignorance as an insult to one's intelligence. In the fashion I used it, it is not an insult.

Way to show your ignorance of both the term "ignorant" and "anonymous."

I use the word ignorant a lot and people always assume I am questioning their intelligence. Funny how a word changes meaning over the years.

Well I'm sure he had some limitations with what he could do from Bill. I mean Bill's the expert, can't he maybe...I dunno, help?
I don't absolve Bill of blame in this situation. However, it may be the case that Bill has been limiting Zimmer's blitz packages because he doesn't think they're any good. People whined and whined last year about Bill's conservative offense. This year, with Romo, the offense was hardly conservative. It was pass heavy (relatively) and creative. Perhpas the offense wasn't limited in 2005 because that is Parcells' style, but rather because of Bledsoe's limitations. In the same vein, perhaps the defense wasn't limited in 2005 because that is Parcells' style, but rather because of Zimmer's limitations (i.e., inability to design and coach effective blitzes, stunts, etc.).

Not sure how you could understand it otherwise. As some suspected, therefore, the culprit seems to be the HC's stubborn unwilligness aproach football as a game of chess. For him it's about brute force which means the teams is screwed if the players aren't clearly superior to those on the opposing team. Not sure I condone that approach.

If that were the case, then why the hell wouldn't Bill draw up some of his own?

He is the defensive genius and all.

You didn't mention Zimmer on the post I quoted.

But it was my basis for saying what I said. theogt was frustrated at Zimmer and he had a right to be. We can't rush the passer and we can't cover and that has been the case since Zimmer got here.

Because he's the head coach, not the defensive coordinator. By the way, I also blame Bill for keeping Zimmer around to DC a 3-4 defense. It was criticized at the time, and the reasons for the criticisms really seemed to come to fruition down the stretch in 2006.

How do you interpret Zimmer's comments that he was "almost suicidal" because he couldn't figure out how to fix the defense?

In the Detroit game we not only mixed up the playcalling, we changed the defensive scheme almost entirely (splitting about 50/50 between the 3-4 and 4-3). I'm not sure saying "Bill won't let him do anything" holds much water.

No offense, but that is absurd. No head coach would sit idly by and watch his season go down the drain without stepping in and adding his input. Especially Parcells.

I'm not sure that it's absurd to expect a defensive coordinator to fix the problems with the defense.

Like I said, Parcells isn't absolved of blame here. But Parcells's blame doesn't absolve Zimmer either, who openly admitted twice to being clueless about how to fix the defense.

The problem was, and it doesn't take a genius to figure this out......Parcells, Zimmer, or any of the coaches knew how to stop the bleeding. That my friends is very disturbing.

Read between the lines stupid!
(Disclaimer- figure of speech, I'm not calling anyone stupid mods.)

Zimmer is blaming Parcells stubborness here. He wouldn't allow him to go to extra dbs versus spread offenses. Preferring to go with his standard base defense instead.

I didn't think it was possible, but Bill may leave this team in worse shape than when he got here.......................that's an exaggeration of course..........but not much of one, which is sad.
