The OP's mother doesn't want a highly active dog. Read the post. Seriously.

My advice was to get a Boxer mix. My statement about pure bred Boxers was to second the belief by others that they were a good breed. Read the post. Seriously.

...and my post about lazy people was serious too. Apparently you're a little too sensitive to get that though.

...or maybe you missed this post...made by the OP:

Your reply reeked of a judgmental attitude towards my idea that this would be too hyper of a dog. Don't fret, Boxers are a good breed. You can rest now.

...and like I said, that wasn't the case. I was agreeing with you, and you were being overly sensitive. It's ok, everyone needs a little hand holding every now and then. ;)

No one said anything about lazy. That's a derogatory term and I was simply giving my rebuttal on it my little pony.

I would say "lazy" irresponsible people should NOT own ANY dog. period. They are a lot of work, but the reward of owning a dog will cannot be measured in how much time and money they cost.

Possibly the only dog better than a boxer is two boxers. My dad had one, she was a hyper idiot until they got her a brother, now they use their hyper activity on each other and are more manageable.

All that being said, breed has seldom meant much to me. I have been around wonderful dogs of nearly every breed. I am partial to boxers, labs/retrievers, and shephards.

That's something to behold-two boxers out in a yard with plenty of room to maneuver and have at it. :D

Unless it's a gov't trained dog, it won't be a "Good" guard dog. IF someone knows the dog is there, it doesn't matter what kind of dog it is, the burgular will get through him. All it takes is a baseball bat or a can of pepper spray.

If you want a dog that is a good "alert" dog (aka barks when he hears a suspicisious noise), is under 50 lbs, and is "easy" to take care of, then get one of these...

They don't require a whole lot of exercise and they bark (or howl) often enough to make a burgular think twice about breaking in.

Huskies are probably the worst "Guard" dogs (or alert dogs) you can get. They don't bark... almost ever. They "Rar" , but rarely ever bark. If someone breaks into your home, they MAY lift an eyelid to look at him. That's about it.

But they're awesome dogs nonetheless. :D

Really though, no one should ever get a dog to "Guard" them. That's what guns are for.

If I chopped my German Shepherd in half, he'd be less than 50 pounds and he's a hell of an alert dog. He barks at weird noises, people outside the window, knocking on the door, etc. And his bark is real real beefy. Plus, he's intimidating looking.

He's a pushover though. :D

If you get a american pit bull terrier from a reliable non-backyard breeder, they are amazing pets. They worship their owners, and are highly intelligent.

also, I agree with the staffordshire terrier comment. They are great dogs. Staffs should be 35-60 lbs. So shouldn't be hard to find one in that range

My Mother's Akita passed away after a short illness last night and I'm trying to get some ideas on a new house/guard dog. She has an incredible German Sheppard/Chow Chow mix for years.

I don't think she wants anything as big as Keiko was again so I'm looking for good dogs/breeds ~50pds or less. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You (or your mother) might want to check out one of the web-based select-a-dog sites.

I like how this one is set up: http://www.petplanet.co.uk/select_a_breed.asp

Best of luck. I hope you'll post an update once decisions are made.

Pardon me Rainbow Brite, but where exactly did I mention 'lazy' in the comment you've quoted here. Oh yeah, I didn't.

...and lazy is lazy, derogatory or not, it is what it is. If you take offense to people even mentioning the term, you've got more sand in your ****** than a beached whale.

So

Yep. My mutt is an AmStaff Boxer mix. She's only about 40lbs. Lots of energy still at the ripe old age of 11, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

I agree 100% about the two boxer thing too. I grew up surrounded by Boxers. We had two, my grandfather had two, and my uncle had three. In all, my family had over ten of the buggers. When they got together all hell broke loose, but in a good way. It was great.

Wow, we have had extreme opposite experiences with Bassetts. We have a bassett and a lab. The bassett is basically a 50 lb paper weight that costs a ton. She has had constant reoccurring ear infections since we got her, we just spent $1000 trying to get them cured. She is dumb as a rock and probably most annoying is they are stubborn as hell. You can call her and she will just stand there and look at ya, won't come to ya or anything. You can tell her 10 times to come in the house and she won't. Then 2 minutes after you close the door she is there scratching. ARRGH! A very aggravating breed IMO. Now, they do bark at any little thing and you will definitely hear it when they do. It is just about as loud a bark as any dog on earth. The cons though outweigh the pros with bassets, at lease in my case.

my Boston scares the Postal worker, the UPS, and Fedex delivery guys, and pretty much ANYONE that walks past our door or to our door. He definitely growls and barks, and lunges at them when the door is open. However, when a stranger is sitting down (like on a bench at a park or on the couch), he will jump in your lap and try to give you extremely wet kisses. I definitely have a Boston on the big side though (30lbs), as most boston are about 12-22lbs, but you can find ones that weigh up to 40lbs.

Jeb knows how to bite. When we play fetch, I always have to watch where I stick my hand (since he never lets go of the squeaky toy, I have to pull it from his mouth) because he doesn't have good bite inhibition and will break skin even though he doesn't mean to.
