Hostiles prior post of other ways to protect your home is good advice.

an alarm system is a must for me here in Arlington. just as important in my mind are the signs and stickers I have in my yard and on doors and windows.

my alarm siren is so loud that when i accidentally set it off I wanna leave the house in a hurry !

i own guns and i am including a link that pretty well outlines Texas law on carrying and owning a gun here. Keep in mind that it is on Wiki, but to the best of my knowledge it is correct.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_the_United_States_(by_state)#Texas

in a nutshell, in Texas you dont need a permit to own most guns. (long guns or handguns).

read the entire article about texas gun laws, in recent years new laws have been passed that give gun owners the right to carry a gun in their car without any kind of permit.

like i said I think this Wiki entry pretty accurately shows our laws.

all of the indoor gun ranges i have been to around here require you to wear eye and ear protection, if you dont have any they will rent you some.

A permit is only required if you intend to carry the gun with you in public.

If you never intend to leave home with the gun, I suggest purchasing a 12 gauge, pump action shotgun. Initially, it only hold three shots; however, if you remove the plug, it can hold 8 plus 1 in the chamber.

I recommend pump actions for two reasons:

1) They're devastating at close range. This is preferable if you're attacked by someone hopped up on PCP.

2) They make a very loud and an immediately recognizable sound when they're chambered. Quick anecdote: As a young man, my father bought a pump action shotgun for home defense because he lived in a crime-ridden neighborhood. Unfortunately, his apartment was broken into before he could also buy ammunition. When he heard the intruder, my father worked the pumping mechanism as loudly as he could. The next sound he heard was hurried footsteps running down the fire escape.

If you do intend to carry the gun in public, you should purchase a 9mm, semi automatic handgun. There's a variety of makes, and any one should do well.

Because you've never fired a gun before, I suggest taking a safety course as soon as you purchase it.

I agree with every word of this post. Nobody on the planet doesnt recognize the sound of a shotgun being "pumped". Someone inside your house hears this, and they are GONE.

No permit required for a shotgun. Or a handgun either as long as you keep it in your home.

Cowboy a LOT of people have NEVER heard or would recognize a pump action being worked. Including druggies and crazies.

Now that would probably also result in the total destruction of your home as well as the certain demise of all intruders.

If he can and you can take a friend I have a ticket to the Commanders game at Fed Ex with your name on it.

I want to shoot that sucker bad. Ever since Danny White posted the original link to that video.

I'm dead serious. I'll ask him tomorrow when I call him. He still has a ton of friends in important places in the military. More so in the Marines and Navy...I don't know if the Marines commissioned this bad boy or not.

Edit...they obviously did...that's a Marine shooting one in the pic above.
