What did you guys think of him?

It's easy to be hypercritical of announcers on a night when your team plays like crap.

But you could see from the opening bell that Johnson was treating this like HIS personal Super Bowl. I've heard his name before but I'm not sure it was announcing NFL games. Maybe NBA?

Regardless of his prior experience it seemed like he was REALLY trying to impress in his role as 1st team substitute. But he was everything I do NOT like in a PBP announcer. Too much emotion. Too much hyperbole. Simms did (IMO) a nice job of keeping things grounded. There was no sense at all from Johnson that this was a preseason game - more like a playoff game.

Give me the PBP announcers (color too for that matter) that don't oversell the game or any plays within it. Johnson made this preseason game bigger than any reasonably knowledgeable fan would buy into. I felt kind of sorry for him (and very annoyed since we sucked). Relax Gus, relax. Let the game stand on its own. You make yourself look foolish otherwise.

Exactly.

And BTW... You guys seem familiar with him... I'd never even heard of him before last night.

Gus Johnson's call of the Stokley TD against Cincinnati last year was one of the best calls I've ever heard. You can still hear it on NFL.com if you can find that game.

Stokley!!!.... Down the sideline!!!!..... WOOWWWW!!!

Gus is the man.

His reputation doing NBA games or whatever, is that he gets way too excited. It seemed like Simms spent most of the night trying to politely explain Dallas' performance. It was weird.

He's actually pretty good on the new Madden :laugh2:

"This Red Zone attempt brought to you buy Old Spice, the greatest smell in the NFL"

He's famous for his march madness calls. He is the one that you always hear yelling in dramatic fashion over those buzzer beater highlights.

He's great - legendary - as a march madness commentator.

He doesn't translate as well to the NFL, imo.

He's great. Delivers all the excitement. He made a preseason game more exciting than what it really was...isn't that his job? Definitely was refreshing hearing him vs. Brad Sham, who tries too hard to turn it into a talk show with Babe and Steve Dennis. I know Sham has history with the Cowboys but I can't stand him. He's quick to judge a play or a player on a certain play without even seeing what actually happened (ex: he was piling it on Leon Williams for that dropped INT and didn't even realize that Jason Williams inadvertently hit him)

I'm a fan of guys like Gus, Kevin Harlan, and Kenny Albert. Can't stand a smart alec like Joe Buck or Mike Tirico, who tries to cram 500 facts and nuggets into every broadcast.

He is awesome at College basketball.

The problem with Gus though is he could bring the same intensity to a chess match.

Gus has done a little bit of everything, from college hockey to the NBA. He does Detroit Lions preseason now, as well as hoops for MSG, but his big gig is March Madness for CBS. What you heard Saturday night was just Gus, nothing special for him. He's always very emotional and flowery, regardless of what he's calling.

Living in an AFC city (and having Sunday Ticket), I have heard a fair amount of Gus Johnson. Imo he's waaaaay too over the top for a national broadcaster.
