Actually, putting yourself in one's shoes and feeling what they are feeling is empathy.

you assume Gus was embarrassed, he has to be embarrassed in order to empathetic by feeling embarrassment for him/with him, whatever.

Asking if anyone else was embarrassed for him is not empathetic, if anything it is probably condescension.

It's also possible to see something that someone does as embarrassing and cringe at the thought.
