Gerald Ford

September 5, 1975: On the northern grounds of the California State Capitol, Lynette Fromme, a follower of Charles Manson, drew a Colt M1911 .45 caliber pistol on Ford when he reached to shake her hand in a crowd. There were four cartridges in the pistol's magazine but the firing chamber was empty. She was soon restrained by Secret Service agent Larry Buendorf. Fromme was sentenced to life in prison, but was released from custody on August 14, 2009, nearly 3 years after Ford's death.[14]

September 22, 1975: In San Francisco, California, Sara Jane Moore fired a revolver at Ford from 40 feet (12 m) away.[15] A bystander, Oliver Sipple, grabbed Moore's arm and the shot missed Ford.[16] Moore was sentenced to life in prison.[17] She was later paroled from a federal prison on Monday, December 31, 2007 (370 days after Ford's death) after serving more than 30 years.

So if i try to kill someone and then they later die i can get paroled from prison?

Sweet deal sign up sheet somewhere?

How common is this kind of thing? Is my memory failing me or didn't this also happen while George W. Bush was in office? Or was it further back when Clinton was in office? I seem to remember someone being tackled out in the street after they shot at the White House. Did anyone doubt that someone who did this would have past mental health issues?

That was 1994, so it was Clinton...

Apparently he was shooting at someone else, and two bullets struck the White House. They're charging him with an assassination attempt even though the President was away when it happened.

I don't know where you got that, but what I read a little bit ago said that Obama was the target... seems the shooter thinks he's *****, and Obama is the Antichrist... the shooter was convinced that Obama is fixing to implant GPS chips in every child in America...

What an idiot. Regardless of politics, you don't just randomly shoot off a gun.

I don't think politics had anything to do with his delusions...

Geez, I forgot about Moore. Thanks.

It had more to do with her serving 30+ years than that he died. I'd say that was pretty irrelevant to the decision.

Keeping people in jail costs a lot of money. If they're obviously not going to hurt anyone again, there's at least an argument to be made for letting them out after that long.

Really is anyone going to look at that and say: "Oh well I'll only be in jail for 30 years, might as well do it. I don't mind missing out on everything until I'm a senior citizen,"?

They will probably admit him into an institution, Hinkley style.

He sure sounds like a Hinkley-style whack job...

I'm not saying they did. I'm just saying that regardless of motivation, it's an incredibly stupid thing to do.
