A great running back. But I must admit I didn't understand his behavior and was disappointed he wasn't more dedicated to the Cowboys.
He wanted a new contract . Something the Star players are basically getting this era or are traded or released .

That’s all this was. Tex played hardball and traded him.

Unfortunately for Duane he never had the same level of success. He didn’t report after the trade to the Chargers and was suspended . They traded him to Skins for a 1st and 2nd round pick. He played in 73 and 74 but wanted a new contract and was released .

He actually came back to Cowboys in 1976 but was released during Camp I think. He ended up playing in WFL and then CFL and if I recall correctly had one more stint in Green Bay but didn’t last.

Quote by Duane;

When asked about playing in the “ultimate game” before the contest, he responded, "If it's the ultimate (game), how come they're playing it again next year?"

I think that he had the famous fumble in Super Bowl VI that Dallas recovered, but the refs gave it to Baltimore. It pretty much cost Dallas the game

He was pretty darn good.
A little bit of a head case back then, but in today's world and NFL, it would mean nothing.

Will watch the video in a bit. Trying to get my coffee started, and got a delivery just showed up.
At least I don't have to wait in that 4 hour window. Was 1st on the list I guess.

All he really wanted to was to get paid. That interview where he talks about his friend getting paid 25 thousand for rookie of the year tells the story to me. Management wouldn't even match that. What a waist of talent and maybe a couple more Super Bowls. He was one of my all-time favorites.

Duane was good, but he and others overlook the fact that when he came in, dallas was a SB caliber team, and the OL was very good
at run blocking.
That is why when he played for other teams he didnt do very good, the teams were not good.

He signed the 11,000 contract then he wanted a new contract , or a big bonus. The cowboys fo and owner were very cheap with ALL the players.
He might have got what he wanted had he played nice and friendly, instead of what he did.
Jim Brown advised him and that was a big part of why he acted that way, and that hurt Duane.
Got him kicked off the cowboys and quickly out of the nfl.

Back then you do what he did and no one will understand it, or want you on their team.

Watching those films, keep in mind those make the players look slower than they were, he was faster than that shows him to be.
My fav play was the quick pitch to duane, in red zone, and it was a easy TD. They didnt use that play enough.

NFL players didnt make much back in 69 or 70 , that is why teams fought to get in playoffs, as that gave them extra $.
I think a SB win gave the winning players $25,000 and that was a lot of money back then.

Duane got all the playoff $ and SB $ both years he played for cowboys, he should have considered that too.

He fumbled in Superbowl V , Chief. But you are right about the fumble. I was sick because Dallas outplayed them the whole game.

I was trying to count them in my head. That was a long time ago.

Happy Birthday to one of my all time least favorite Cowboys.
I was a huge fan of Calvin Hill and his exciting running style. Those high knees, hurdles, physical style, getting every inch possible. I always felt the team rallied behind Hill better too. Thomas just annoyed me in every way. He was a bit of a prima donna even before he proved anything. Some players just have that effect on you. Calvin Hill and Billy Joe Dupree….I just liked those tall, arms and legs, players and the different way they moved on the field.

Somehow I get the impression you weren't even around.

He was before my time. Just how good was he?

I watched him play in person. He was quite outspoken but we are talking about the early 70s. I was 10-11 years old. He was smooth as glass. Perhaps the only other RB that I would compare him to was Gayle Sayers. I have mentioned before that my Dad worked for Branniff International Airlines. It was the day after the SB but we went to meet the players disembarking at Love Field. DFW did not exist. I went up to shake his hand and he smiled and patted me on the head.

NFL Rookie of the Year, All Pro, Pro Bowl and Super Bowl winning RB for the real Dallas Cowboys.

Name me a RB that can say that over the last 26 years of the Arlington Jonesboys?
malcontent would not talk to the team or other players.

Thomas described Cowboys general manager Tex Schramm as "sick, demented and totally dishonest" -- "Well, he got two out of three," Schramm replied.

You’re thinking of Super Bowl V. Super Bowl VI was the Super Bowl Dallas won against Miami. Super Bowl V against Baltimore was a year before I started following the Cowboys. From watching the highlights, it was the turnovers, a deflected pass that John Mackey caught for a TD and the pass that Dan Reeves should’ve caught that was picked that cost the Cowboys the game.

I know, I just remembered wrong. I remember the whole season very well with 2 of the worst beatings in team history by the Cardinals and the Vikings. Then the epic journey to get to the Super Bowl and then hear the Landry can't win the big one talk.

Yes he came back to the Cowboys in 76. I believe the word was that he had become a 100% vegetarian and they used that to say that he had lost all of his speed and moves. He also had some lower leg issues if I remember correctly, not ankles but more like calves.

He talked.

Thomas had refused to talk to the media in the week leading up to Dallas' 24-3 win over Miami in Super Bowl VI. After the Cowboys' win, Brookshier stood next to the running back, talking about his speed and building up to this question: "Are you that fast?" "Evidently," Thomas replied.

He actually talked a said one of the greatest Super Bowl media quotes.
quote-if-it-s-the-ultimate-game-how-come-they-re-playing-it-again-next-year-duane-thomas-86-59-57.jpg

Calling him a malcontent is disingenuous. Because, if you are not talking, you are not complaining or being a disruption..."Evidently". Calling him a loser is asinine considering he led his team rushing as a rookie running them to one Super Bowl, and then followed it up by winning the next Super Bowl leading the team in rushing. That means he has 2 NFC Conference Championship rings and 1 Super Bowl Ring. Loser don't have that kind of Bling "Evidently".

Again, name me a RB that can say they accomplished this over the last 26 years of the Arlington Jonesboys?
