He talked.

Thomas had refused to talk to the media in the week leading up to Dallas' 24-3 win over Miami in Super Bowl VI. After the Cowboys' win, Brookshier stood next to the running back, talking about his speed and building up to this question: "Are you that fast?" "Evidently," Thomas replied.

He actually talked a said one of the greatest Super Bowl media quotes.

Calling him a malcontent is disingenuous. Because, if you are not talking, you are not complaining or being a disruption..."Evidently". Calling him a loser is asinine considering he led his team rushing as a rookie running them to one Super Bowl, and then followed it up by winning the next Super Bowl leading the team in rushing. That means he has 2 NFC Conference Championship rings and 1 Super Bowl Ring. Loser don't have that kind of Bling "Evidently".

Again, name me a RB that can say they accomplished this over the last 26 years of the Arlington Jonesboys?

Duane Thomas and Hollywood Henderson. Two incredibly talented players who COULD have made it into the HOF. Now with Henderson is was drugs; with Thomas I agree with some others about Jim Brown giving him bad advice but Duane did not have to take it. I think he just could not bring himself to bend like you had to back in that NFL to get along. I wonder if he ever regrets it?

As regards the boys being cheap that was true; but they were far from alone being that way back then. There were not many teams that actually were known for spending more than others on talent in the NFL of the early 70's. The war with the AFL had been VERY expensive and a lot of team owners were really not all that rich back then. Not like todays bunch of billionaires.

Thomas was a stoner also.

Somehow I get the impression you weren't even around.
Dream on, brother. I’ve been a fan since 1966. I’m 66 years old. I think it’s okay not to like certain players. I was a huge Calvin Hill fan. I couldn’t stand Duane Thomas. Then I had to watch Calvin Hill in a Commanders uniform, hurdling our tacklers while Thomas had grumped himself off the team and out of football.

After becoming rookie of the year being called the next Jim Brown he insisted on renegotiating his contract .

But Tex refused . Duane called him “ deceitful” and Landry a “ plastic man “ .

He was silent all season to media in 1971 and as a result wasn’t voted SB MVP.
Just an FYI for everyone, Calvin Hill also won Rookie of the Year, helped win SB VI and 2 Conference titles. He made 4 pro bowl teams and the All Pro team twice. He did all of that in just 6 seasons as a Cowboy.

I will always feel the Cowboys kept the wrong RB in Duane Thomas since he was a malcontent and poor teammate. Dallas finally sent him packing, and Thomas played a total of 4 NFL seasons for the Cowboys and Commanders, rushing for a total of 2,038 yards….that’s his whole career!

Calvin played in the NFL for 12 seasons with the Cowboys, Commanders, and Browns. He rushed for 6,301 yards with a career 4.2 yard average. Thomas had one good year with the Cowboys that resulted in the media putting him on a pedestal. His career was a disappointment. Watch some Calvin Hill highlights if you’ve never seen any.

Calvin Hill scored 42 rushing touchdowns. He also caught 275 passes for 2,899 yards and 24 receiving touchdowns.

I don’t recall the Duane Thomas-Jim Brown comparison ever being made. I think some may be confused with Calvin Hill as he is compared to Brown here…..https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=3120172268250610

Loved Calvin as a runner and he set the league on fire when we drafted him. Thomas was the better runner, he had two great years in Dallas, not 1. Duane was often compared to Jim Brown, not Calvin. Injuries kind of derailed Calvin’s career somewhat, Duane derailed his own career unfortunately. I mentioned yesterday that Duane‘s best friend was Steve Kiner the lb from Tennessee, I believe he was from Tennessee. He also got along really well with Billy Parks another free spirit. Duane has said that when LeRoy Jordon retired LeRoy reached out to him. They got together for dinner and Duane really appreciated LeRoy contacting him. Evidently LeRoy apologized for his actions when they were teammates, LeRoy had learned that everything that Duane was saying was pretty much true, he was just late in realizing it. I do remember LeRoy having a big contract problem at some point. That’s all I gotz….

If FA had existed back in the 70's, Schramm would have had hell holding onto some of the players. He was not well liked by the players and let it be known that they had little choice but to play for what he was willing to pay.

First of all I’m a huge Calvin Hill fan. What a class act . And Thomas blew his career. But just a few fact checks .

Calvin won his Rookie of the year in 1969.
Calvin was not released to keep Thomas.
Thomas was traded in 1972.
Hill was here until 1974.

Thomas had two good seasons with his first Rookie season in 1970 which he didn’t start until the 5th game of the season and still won NFL Rookie of the year. And of course 1971. SB VI was his last game as a Cowboy.

And you’re welcome to look it up but after his Rookie season there were some making comparisons to Jim Brown . I’ll provide one link here that suggest as much. There are others .

Yep

And Tex actually thought they should play for less with all of the playoff money and opportunities for endorsements.

Thanks for sharing. Hill was also compared to Brown for his combination of physicality and speed. That was in the video I shared. Thanks for the correction on the dates.

Well,we have something in common. I'm 66.I realize that Duane became a handful, don't get me wrong. I liked Calvin Hill too.As a matter of fact, my dad took me to a game in 72. it was the same year that Duane got cut or traded. I suppose I liked that he stood up for his self. I didn't understand why they didn't at least give him the $25,000 for rookie of the year. Said he was broke. The Cowboys were one of the lowest paying teams in the nfl. Everybody knew that. Yes, he messed up his whole career by acting the way he did. On the other hand, he stood up for what he believed.
I just thought he was something special talent wise and too bad they didn't work it out. I believe they may have won a couple more superbowls with him. Bob Lilly said he reminded him of Jim Brown. I just liked that gliding running style he had.Lilly giving his two cents about Thomas is on youtube.

Loved his play. Can't be called a diva because he was just quiet. And passive. And angry.

And his career was short because of his malcontent.
Tex gets fired, runoff by Jerry Jones, and is dead. Tom Landry get unceremoniously fired by Jerry Jones, and is dead.

But, Its amazing how short Thomas career is suppose to be when you keep talking about him and he is one of the spokesmen for the 1972 Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl team forever in the show "America's Game: The Super Bowl Champions". His Super Bowl quote is quoted every Super Bowl media week. He is alive a well in San Diego, CA and Cowboy fans are still remembering his birthday.

May we all have the good fortunes of your so called Malcontent.
