Ultimate irony of course is how Americans now really crap on France, call them cowards etc but without French assistance from Louis XVI, you might have lost the Revolutionary War.

Of course on that cold January day in 1793 in Paris, I am sure Louis XVI wondered why he helped the American colonists given the money spent helped create the crisis which led to the seminal event in Western European history, the French Revolution

Very good point. Another irony in that is that one of the main reasons why france was willing to help us was their addiction/dependence on our tobacco exports. The one crop that ensured our freedom ensured slavery and a chattel like status for the african americans of this country for almost a century longer.
