Has Hollywood Run Out of Ideas?

I saw where they were talking about a new Blade Runner movie coming out. It got me to thinking. With remakes of classics coming out left and right (and I'm a fan of most of them) or prequels, how many of y'all are fans? Or is there a remake that you would like to see that Hollywood hasn't thought of yet?

Yes they have run out of ideas and pretty much all of the remakes I have seen sucked.

Yes.

There are plenty of good books for them to pick up, read and adapt, but, (at least story -wise, because definitely not in terms of SPX), they've run dry on new ideas and are afraid to try something not nicely fitted to what they think is a guaranteed niche.

Something isn't right. Bad writers perhaps? I agree with vta that Hollywood seems to take the safest route to make money because nothing matters but the bottom line.

Have we come full circle? vta and big dog are right. Are the publishers requesting too much money for the rights? IDK but one or two remakes a year I understand but it seems like a third of the movies are remakes.

I think it's a financial issue. Those movies have made money. So you'll continue to see more of them until they stop making money.

Come on guys, isn't it obvious? They haven't run out of ideas, it's just that their current idea is to remake previously made movies! ;)

Music is the same. Blew my mind when I heard my parents singing the chorus to a "new" song.

I doubt it concerning publishing rights. From the outside and having done some research on selling screenplays, it looks to me like it's the business decisions they're making. It's entirely cannibalistic (all these retreads) and exclusive, either by nepotism or ideology and also political. They've let it all go to their heads and think they have something to say with some movies being touted as 'important'.

Is it a sequel for Blade runner or just a remake? I think they should have left that movie alone anyway.

I always laugh about threads like this. There are original films released EVERY WEEKEND. Some of them, very good.

The fact that no one can be bothered to go watch something that they haven't had marketed to them over and over and over doesn't mean there aren't good movies still being made out of Hollywood.

If Box Office numbers are the only measuring stick for success, then yes, there is nothing good coming out of Hollywood.

It'll probably be a prequel, and yes they should have left it alone.

Ridly Scott calls it "A total reinvention," but it's being called a follow up.

They ran out of ideas long time ago.
They have made King Kong 3 times,Dances with Wolves twice(they just called them "Pocahontas" and "Avatar"...same plot),they made a CGI movie about Marmaduke, think about it,Marmaduke.
What's next?..."Friday" based on Rebecca Black's song?..."Fright Night"?...oh wait,they just did that.

Remember that movie with Nicholson and Dicaprio? The Departed.
It is a carbon copy of a chinese film called "Infernal Affairs".

The well is all dried out.

on and on and on and on

Yeah, the worst part of it all is there are so many people out there young and old that have no idea they're remakes.

IMO the problem is that fewer studios are wanting to take risks. I think there are plenty of new ideas out there, just to get a studio to back it takes an amazing script or some big name actors. They're risk averse right now, not wanting to spend money on a new idea to have it bomb.

I think all these studios think they can take an older movie and give it the attention it deserves and come out with a hit.

Problem is, most of the time the reason the older movie is popular is because it is an older movie and was ahead of it's time, at the time.

I read somewhere that another factor is copyrights and copyright infringement. It is apparently safer to do a remake than an original movie with parts of it that may bear some resemblence to some scene in some other movie decades ago and then expensive lawsuits pop up.

It made sense to me.

:rolleyes:We decide what movies to make with our money.

We make a lot of bad choices and have for years. When we choose garbage day in and day out, garbage is whats going to be produced en mass.

How many Spoof movies did the guys who did Scary Movie 3+ make? Date Movie.. Meet the Spartans, Superhero Movie? Seriously? Why are these terrible movies made? cause they make money.

Stop going to see bad movies, and stop taking your kids. Maybe one day they'll focus more on quality.

People who think the Transformers movies are good, is why Hollywood sucks.

Now I'm gonna go spend Money on Spy Kids 4D!!! Or wait, maybe I'll see Final Destination 16.
....:rolleyes::rolleyes:

They need to stop any prequels sequels re-imaginings or re-boots. If they do a Bladerunner, just a non-connected parallel story, that won't clustermuck the whole characters and environment.
