Has The 5-Yd Pass Replaced the Handoff?

This is the classic example of correlation does not equal causation. We are winning those games and so we run the ball to take time off the clock. When we are losing we have to pass more.

Not saying that we don't need to be more effective running the ball, especially in the red zone. But this stat is not evidence for that.

Well, you convinced me. The evidence supporting your assertion would be compelling, except there isn't any. Also, recall the topic here is 5 yard passes taking the place of running the ball.

yes we can dink and dunk as long as we attack the outside. That said, Romo doesn't throw to the sidelines and Callahan doesn't call enough pitches to the outside, even though we have success out there. we can live with just a occasional deep ball, as long as the defense has to respect the whole field horizontally.

Dunbar should be a huge weapon here.

oh yea, enough with the 3rd and five passes on 3rd and 7.

Well, the NFL Channel just put up a graphic showing the Cowboys are 9-0 when DeMarco carries the ball 20 or more times, 4-11 when he carries it less than 20 times. So, at least with the Cowboys, there would appear to be a good reason to hand it off rather than throw it short, at least 20 times a game.

Similarly, teams that 'take a knee' in the fourth quarter at least twice tend to win games a lot more often than teams that don't. If Callahan has any brains at all, the first two downs of the 4th quarter, we just get it out of the way and set ourselves up for success every week.

Wouldn't you concede that taking a knee has nothing to do with moving the ball, so it would not be relevant to this discussion?
