Jerry Calls Audible On Character
September 18, 2007 5:02 PM

You had to know Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones would make the call at some point. When we first told you about rumblings of the club's interest in disgraced ex-Bears defensive tackle Tank Johnson, the Cowboys sounded genuinely hurt.

Director of scouting Jeff Ireland told Fort Worth Star-Telegram columnist Randy Galloway that the Cowboys removed Johnson from their 2004 draft board because of his off-field problems at the University of Washington.
"Any interest would be pretty minimal right now," Ireland said. "There were a lot of issues coming out of college with this guy, and now it's been compounded by what went on with the Bears. I don't think we'd be interested at all."
What Ireland, a fellow Baylor alum, didn't realize was that Bill Parcells' philosophy of not offering refuge to criminals and other creeps was no longer in place.

From his palatial estate at Saratoga National Golf Club, you can bet Bill has been keeping close watch on his legacy, and in my mind, it pretty much ends with today's signing of Johnson.

You could find a lot of things to criticize Parcells for during his stay in Dallas, but he was successful at cleaning up the club's tarnished image. Yes, I realize T.O. arrived on his watch, but you can't accuse the mercurial wide receiver of being a criminal.

What's funny is Johnson's rap sheet should've confirmed the Cowboys' draft-day decision in 2004. But now, we'll get to hear Jones talk of redemption and second chances, a number that's not quite accurate if you visit with Bears management.

Jones is by nature a gambler, and he knows how rare it is to find a talented defensive tackle on the street. From a football perspective, Johnson is a perfect fit for coach Wade Phillips' 3-4 defense. His background in a 4-3 defense in Chicago is actually a good foundation because he's familiar with lining up in different spots.

He's a 6-3, 300-pound (pre-prison snacks) man who once ran a 4.7 in the 40-yard dash. He'll have to wait until Nov. 11 to play unless commissioner Roger Goodell gets a wild hair and reduces the suspension to six weeks, according to my pal Todd Archer, but it's a done deal.

A new era has begun in Cowboys football. One that should look really familiar. In this cutthroat league, bothersome details such as wisdom and integrity are pretty low on the depth chart.

By the way, when he came out of college and ran that 4.7 he was 309 lbs., not 300.

its a very cap friendly contract, what more could you want.

give him a short leash and an opportunity, whats the worst that can happen?

he gets out of line, put him in the employment line. Like Owens I think this will work because who will be willing to give him ANOTHER shot is he messes this up?

I don't see why Tank can't add 10-12 lbs and play at 310 or so...he has the frame and size to carry that. Who cares about a 4.7 at NT???

If he is 310 and runs under a 5.0...that's impressive...

We talk about him being undersized at 300...eat a few bacon cheeseburgers and we are not having this disccusion :)

Bill Parcells was the HC when we signed Jermaine Brooks, Leonardo Carson, Abram Elam, and Terrell Owens. All had red flags flying over them as well, and 3 of them for criminal cases.

He also brought back Keith Davis and kept him around after a 2nd shooting incident.

The perception that all Parcells did was clean up this team is as fake as Paris Hilton's interview with Larry King.

Mosley was just on GAC, and you can tell that he doesn't like this at all. Guess he wants 100% squeaky clean guys.

People like Mosley think it will tarnish our franchise if he gets in trouble again. I am like what? we have a good player in Ratliff, but add depth with Tank Johnson. We sign Tank Johnson to a contract where if he was to get in trouble again I guarantee Jerry Jones will put his butt on the street again before it becomes a distraction to the team. It hurts this franchise none whatsoever.

He trusted Jerry and took him at his word when he preened about "character." Big mistake.

Didn't Parcells also write a letter to a Judge to spring Leonardo Carson from a jail term, a little early?

There's a big difference between tolerating criminal behavior on the active roster and giving a shot at rehabilitation to a talented, misguided player. With the money Jerry Jones has spent to support good decision making on this team, he's got the right to preen about our recent record and to be taken seriously while doing so. Mark Mosely's opinion in this matter means nothing.

You can add his boy Marcus Coleman to the list.

Just rehasing that rap sheet of Tank's only reconfirms the obvious, Mosley is spot on...Criminals recruited to your team is no way to do business.

Garbage move, IMHO.

How so? Explain the downside in this move, because I just don't see anything.

Not just character players. But Projects.

Add Columbo and Romo. Although they dont fit into the "character" category but they are fallen players. Most of these players are those that the league gave up on and we got for cheap worked hard on and they seem to have paid off big talent wise. They gave us a return on our coaching investment. Tank has till week 8 to learn how we do things, and hopefully he will be a valuable asset for years to come.

What a bunch of self-serving bullcrap. Jerry never made any such distinctions about "active roster" players. If he did, guys like Keith Davis would be wearing a different uniform.

What recent record? 2-0? Or the ten years without a playoff victory?

Mark Mosely's opinion in this matter means nothing.

I'm sure he's crushed by your disapproval.

I guess you have to decide how you want to do business really...You want to win at all costs, regardless of the message it sends, or do you want to continue to foster a franchise that is respected not just for the success on the field but the way they run things off the field.

I see clubs and teams in a variety of sports and the ones that always draw my disgust are those that refuse to consider respect and honor in the equation.

I'm not saying the Cowboys (even before TO) are filled with choir boys but few come to mind in recent years that you'd see with a rap sheet like Tank's...Nobody says he doesn't deserve another chance but why in football?...Let the guy see what the real world is like and try to make a living without people throwing money at him...You reap what you sow
