The Cowboys would keep themselves out of trouble if they focus on the 2015 season as much or more than the 2014 season. It is highly realistic that the defense could be great by 2015 but there is a much lower probability that it will be great in 2014.

Focusing on 2015 would prevent them from signing older players even on low cost contracts.

They need to get YOUNG free agents in and get them a year in the scheme. Signing stopgap older veterans just keeps young player from getting experience in the scheme.

You are correct. That is called looking ahead and making business decisions. Instead we just kick the can down the road to compete instead of having a down year or 2 and fully rebuilding. Jerry is trying to squeeze blood out of a turnip and it just isn't going to happen. That is the biggest problem here in Dallas. Over paying players who aren't good enough or worth it.

Jerry would probably franchise him... Since it worked so well with Spencer... On the real.. I'd probably resign hatch and spencer if..... And only if they take reasonable contracts.. spencer 1 year deal..

Hopefully they let him walk. Jerry needs to resist giving another player on the wrong side of 30 a big deal.

I think that the drastic amount of money that was paid to Ratliff and Spencer this season for now return on investment has to be on Jerry's mind. Hopefully, it will help him make better decisions.

Neither is going to do that. Both will be in their 30s, eager for that one last payday. Can't blame them. It would have to be a huge one year deal for each, and I doubt that's salary cap feasible.

But our owner is a fool, so he'll probably lavish one of them with a huge long-term deal.

Hatcher, you had a very good season and you were one of the best on a bad group.
Take the best deal you can, hopefully not in the division, and play for a championship. You won't get that here.
good luck

My opinion hasn't changed, Spencer will be back on a one year incentive deal because Dallas is the best place for him to rebuild value. Hatcher will be back because he is needed, he was our best DL this season and Jerry can work a contract that gives him enough money upfront but still protects the team from him collapsing.

Then they sign a Henry Melton type DT, draft another and install Hayden and Bass as high quality backups. Those five are a very good group, plus if they decide to rotate Crawford between DE and DT, all the better.

Resign him at the right price. If he doesn't want it, bye.

Either way, have to plan for the future.

Good player for the Cowboys. I would like for him to stay at a very reasonable contract. But, considering our cap situation, he may go elsewhere. I'd rather have Hatcher than Ware at this point in their careers. Anyway, time to go young and give Crawford and Bass and some others a shot. At least the young guys will be hungry and motivated to play well. Hatcher just seems to want to cash out as his first priority.

Canty and Bowen didn't do much when they left. So, this might be much ado about little.

The only notable DLs-
Hatcher: he's too old to be breaking our bank, should be gone next year.
Ware: they'll keep him though they probably shouldn't,
Crawford: is being relied upon to be a quality starter despite being unproven and coming off of a serious injury,
Selvie: should be a decent rotational guy.

They've got a lot of work to do getting this DL back to being a "strength".

I bet hatcher and spencer will be back and that jones only drafts one d-lineman in the middle rounds. then he will go and sign a bunch of free agent draft kids and hope that he hits on one of them. this d-line will still be a trainwreck next year. also he will hope that bass and Crawford can play next year and be starters. I think that Crawford has a future.
