He could be in line for Spears' job with Spears going to NT after Fergi leaves???

If anyone is going to be moved from DE to NT it will be Ratliff; Johnson was already playing NT behind Fergi. Both Johnson and Ratliff are in the 6'2" to 6'3" ranger and both are over 300 pounds. That height and weight gives them a low center of gravity and makes it easier to get the leverage to take on multiple blockers in the middle. Both of those guys project much better at NT than a guy who is 6'6" and 285 (Hatcher). Even if Hatcher does gain 20 pounds he would still weigh about the same weight as Spears but 2 inches taller; he would have the height and weight suited for a 3-4 DE. That would give us Ferguson, Johnson and Ratliff on the inside and Spears, Canty, Ellis and Hatcher on the outside.Cowboy_love_4ever said:My only problem was, we have 5 Hatchers on the team. Yes Ratliff and Johnson are listed as virtually the same size at 293 and 294 and 6’2” / 6’3”. However, I read in Spags column the other day where they were both going about 305 now so that listing may be outdated. That would make them both very close to the same size as Ferguson if it is indeed true. I think by year’s end Hatcher will replace Ratliff as the second string DE in the primary 3-4 set and Ratliff will become strictly an interior player at DT/NT.blindzebra said:Ratliff is 6-3 293, basically the same size as Pepper and bigger than Glover.
When we drafted him we were looking at him as a NT, he's only 10 pounds away from Parcells goal weight for his NT.
Drafting Hatcher puts Coleman on the bubble.
Base first string:
Spears, Ferguson, Canty
Second string:
Ratliff, Johnson, Ellis
Third string:
DE Hatcher, NT Ratliff
Nickel first string:
Ellis, Canty, Ratliff, Ware
Second team:
Carpenter, Spears, Ferguson, Hatcher/Burnett

Beyond that I think your lineups are about right except that I don't think Burnett has the bulk to put his hand on the ground; it would be Thornton there before it would be Burnett. Burnett will either be battling Shanle and Fowler for the backup spot behind Ayodele and James or possibly be backup to Carpenter at SOLB if we decide to ditch Singleton's salary.
I totally disagree about Thornton; he will be the backup to Ware. Burnett would never have seen that spot had Thornton not been on IR last year. He certainly won't be lining up with his hand on the ground; he is too small but Thornton CAN line up in a down set. Boiman, Fowler, Shanle and Burnett will battle it out for the inside backup spots should we decide to keep Singleton. If we let Singleton go then Burnett moves out behind Carpenter and the other three will battle it out for the inside backup spots.blindzebra said:Burnett spelled Ware several times last year prior to his injury, Thornton will be lucky to make the roster. I see Burnett backing up inside and for Ware, as well as playing LB in the nickel. He will pretty much be our 5th starter.
Starters:
Carpenter, James, Ayodele, Ware
Back ups:
Singleton/ Boiman, Burnett/ Boiman, Fowler, Burnett
Nickel
Carpenter and Burnett
Shanle and Thornton battle it out with any 2nd day draft pick for the 8th spot.
You want to trade away the guy who has lead our team in sacks almost every year since he's been here???? He was the best DE taken in the '98 draft, we used a #8 over-all pick on the guy!! and you want to trade him for a 4th round pick!!:bang2:neosapien23 said:Does anyone think Ellis is gone? Hatcher projects really well as a 3-4 DE. He is big, fast, and strong. I don't know much about him, so I wasn't happy with the pick. Ellis might be traded to Houston for their top 4th and 6th. Then we could take Max Jean Guilles. With the extra 6 and 7th rounders, Dallas can move up to nab Jon Scott. If we can somehow get these two guys in the 4th than our draft can be saved!!
