Haters vs Homers: A Discussion?

Disclaimer: THIS IS MY HONEST ATTEMPT TO OPEN REASONABLE DIALOGUE SO THAT I, AND OTHERS, CAN GAIN AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE “OTHER SIDE”.
———————

The eternal dichotomy of sports fandom… the haters and the homers.

One, blindly optimistic; one, unshakably critical. I most definitely fall into the latter category.

In saying this, I’d like to open the floor to the optimists (I won’t name names)! I’m hoping we can have a constructive conversation and hear each other out on things such as:

Why do you dislike someone being critical of your favorite team and/or players of that team? Do you feel it’s disrespectful? Anti-fan?

While watching games, how do you react when things go wrong? If Dak makes a terrible throw or has an untimely interception or Anthony Brown gets burned, what’s your internal and external reaction? Do you have negative thoughts or do you directly move on to the next play and hope for the best?

I’d really like to hear from you guys, on both sides. There is usually a strict divide on this and there’s lots of judgment tossed around (especially during games when tensions are high). But maybe we can gain some perspective and have rational discussion while emotions are stable.

Go Cowboys!
I was one who said that the Skins were going to beat the Boys today so you can serve up all the crow you want. BUT this team is in trouble because their so called leader is no more. Dak's play today was almost average at best, this is one $40 million-dollar QB who cannot carry this team on his shoulders, he looks horrible in the pocket when he has time to throw the ball and the Skins should of had at worse 3 picks today because of Dak's inability to read the coverages properly. Yes, the D carried this team today, if they don't want to go one and done in the playoffs then some hard decisions have to be made about the $40 million-dollar man who in playing over hyped, over paid, underachieving football................

If there are “teams” here, we are on the same one lol. No need to convince me of what you’re saying

Interesting topic. I like the many individual point of views that this can be answered with.

For me personally I look at games from two distinct and equal perspectives. As a fanatic and as an observer looking for objective hope for success.

As a fan I take every lucky bounce and use it to add to a hope for an unexpected success story.

As an objective observer I am old enough to remember the truly solid teams we have had and remember what a product looked like on the field I could be confident in and know that loses would be few and far between.

We have not had a great run for the past 25 years so the fanatic in me has kept me watching but the objective side hasn’t had many seasons to feel great so I take individual bright spots and wait for evidence the supporting cast can compliment them.

A good example in my opinion is one that stands out at the end of Dak’s rookie year. I watched the success Dak had and felt he had to continue starting over Romo so the momentum and chemistry building wasn’t interrupted. Then Romo came in for one drive against the Eagles and effortlessly passed down the field for a TD against the same team Dak was battling. Afterwards I still agreed Dak was the future and needed to keep the reigns but the objective side of me never forgot how easy Romo made it look in only drive he had. The objective side never stopped wondering if that season would have turned out different had Romo started once healthy.

For what it’s worth I always saw Romo as the QB who couldn’t put it all together when it mattered and I see the glaring weaknesses in Daks current game. In both cases the fan always gets excited when they showed a glimmer of hope I could cling to but I still expect the other shoe to drop and hope for the unexpected.

It’s not as simple as that. Nothing wrong with being critical of a player, coach, owner are whomever. I don’t use the word hater anymore. But when I did it was to a hand full of posters who do NOTHING ELSE but criticize a player all the time. Everyday, every thread and almost every post. They rarely create a thread about anything other than what they are critical of. Those are the haters you speak of.

Great perspective here, man. I’m very much the same. Very well articulated.

I can appreciate what you’re saying. If I’m being honest, I was hoping you’d lend your view here. I do agree that constant negativity gets old. And it’s good to know that you’re moderately accepting of criticism of the team when it’s warranted.

Good too see a loser fan own up.....

He claims to be a coach but doesn't know how kids are. They are mean....specially middle school.....nasty!
You should hear the kids are my son's peewee game this weekend. They have tougher skin then us. Doesn't make it right, but it is the truth.

As I've said many times. The hate on these boards is out of control. Hate just for the sake of self-obsession is a disease. In the past, people's dad's would have beat that out of them so we don't have to put up with it just generally.

But since most of the people that hate on these boards had no quality dad as a role model, they find their validation through annihilation. Like anybody cares about their annihilation.

They can't feel pleasure. Unless they are inflicting pain on others.

It's not reason or logic or intelligence that drives them. It is pure, unadulterated rage born of their miserable condition.

We should help ease their pain.

Ban the haters.

It's fundamental.

More than moderately accepting. There’s things to be critical of in every game, especially the one today. Just don’t make it your (not talking about you) lifelong agenda to do nothing else but crap on that player or coach or whomever.

I try to remove the emotion from the way I analyze the team and the situations surrounding them . I try to talk with posters that post in a similar way . I like to converse with posters that have the ability to back up their theories with facts rather than pure fandom and emotion
I dont want to try and change anyone to my way of thinking but would rather just converse with people that look at the game in a similar manner

There are many good football minds on this site and its always a learning experience if you let it be rather than draw hard lines in the sand about what is and is not proper Cowboy fandom.
I have always found it real easy to just ignore the stuff you dont like and find another thread to post in that has posters that are more on your wave length .

Im not really into the Haters and Homers thing I feel like we are just fans . Some very casual and some much more serious but we all like to analyze the team and formulate opinions . I like to hear the opinions of posters that have much experience to draw from as I feel I can learn more than from one relying more on their emotions . Hey there is a nitch in this forum for everyone to have an enjoyable experience but it may take a bit of time to find it

Its not hate, its criticism, concern and discussion. You cheer the good things while you watch the game live, but you come to a forum to discuss the things that you feel need improvement. Its simple Sheesh. It isnt "HATE" stop being so linguistically simple

Ban the simpletons.

Haters and homers…two extremists on opposite ends of the spectrum, equally annoying since they won’t budge off their schtick, ready to defend their position regardless of situation.

I agree with each group on some things, disagree on others, depending on the situation.

Some run purely on hope. That's the beauty of sports. Fans have that luxury.

I look at it like I look at pretty much everything else. I celebrate the small victories but quickly focus on the areas of weakness with an eye on improving so I can celebrate the big victory. I have that luxury as a fan, as well.

Unfortunately, the two perspectives are diametrically opposed even though we all want the same thing in the end.

And that's when the fight starts...

I think you have a very weak, sensitive definition of hate.

Because people don't see things exactly as you....haters.

Yes sir!

I’m glad I opened this discussion because I truly thought you and a few others just despised criticism of any kind. But this is opening my eyes a bit. Appreciate it

I hate this binary bullcrap, its like politics these days.
There is always gray; never purely black and white. But I framed the original post as I did for purposes of discussion. I wanted to bridge the very obvious divide or at least open some eyes to other views (regardless of how different those views are to their own). To me, that’s not very controversial. You don’t have to fall on either specific side

It's funny, if you criticize LVE for playing poorly, nobody calls you an LVE hater. If you criticize Anthony Brown, nobody calls you an Anthony Brown hater.

You can pretty much criticize anyone outside of the QB and you're safe. You're still a fan. Criticize the QB for playing poorly though and here come the insults and the excuses.
