Kavon is Barry church that can actually HIT. They both suck in man to man vs tight ends.

Heath feels the heat from Woods and really only has speed/experience over him @ this point. If Heath doesn't have a good start I hope the team makes the switch though they've been historically slow to supplant vets. They're just know acknowledging Moore might not be a legit #2, Collins move to RT, Ratliff to DE in 3-4 (old school :D) and sign a real NT, etc.

What makes Kavon that but Church a decent starter?

Barry Church was our best tackling defensive player. He will be missed more then people realize back there. Maybe not in coverage but certainly making tackles. Kavon isn't anywhere close to Church IMO.

Church wasn't Chirch in year 2 either.

Blanton > Frazier ?

I think they signed Blanton to compete with Frazier and Heath. But it has not worked as planned. Blanton seems to be playing 3rd team as Frazier playing 2nd. Woods has had limited playing time, just the one game, but showed he can hit.

To me it's between Heath and Frazier, but they are giving Heath the starting spot for now. And will probably stay that way to start the season.
however, I would not be surprised if it changes by the end of the year. But next year, I bet it is all open between the 3.

Frazier ranks high in one category and is all of a sudden in contention to start. lol get real. Heath has shown in the past that he's a baller, especially the playoff game last year against Rodgers. He has had an excellent camp too and most importantly he has been making plays on the ball just like he has when given the opportunity.

All players are in contention to start...just look at how Kellen Moore is pushing Dak...oh, wait, never mind....:muttley:

I love the competition going on on this team right now. Depth may be the strongest we've had since the 90s.
I agree on the depth.... but i have yet to see anyone step up on D to stand out over the back ups and thats scary

He's not going to beat out Heath this year, but I would be surprised if he's cut and would think it was a bad move.

Out of college he tested very similarly to Barry Church, but with far greater speed and explosiveness metrics.

To me, he's the type of guy that shows how well your coaching staff develops talent. I can't imagine him getting cut because he's improved substantially from last year.

He's a guy that you want to see pay his dues thru special teams and then hopefully by next year or year four he's a quality role player or possibly starter on the team. He has the size and athleticism to do so, but coming from a small school hurts him. And if he stays healthy, good development from him in the next 2 years is a good example of a staff that knows how to be patient and develop talent.

He's the guy you keep for 4 years as a special teams and backup guy that you never extend a contract to.

Frazier is a core special teamer who would be a load in run support if called upon. If he were asked to play single high, I'd be a little concerned. I don't think he starts anytime soon, but he will be a solid contributor on this team.

They did the same thing basically with Jeff Heath. He was a player from a small school. He has size and speed and a big hitter. The plan was to bring him along slow and learn. But he was thrown into the fire because of injuries in his 1st year. And did not looks well, but the entire defense didn't either, as they had like 18 different starters on the DL that year, and I think Lee was out the entire year. Then injuries in the secondary as well.

so Heath got the bad reputation from that. Though lately he has been better. So now the coaches believe in him as they did when they extended his contract. I just need to see consistency on the field. However Frazier is in the same mold in a way. Makes for good competition which makes both better.

Kevon won't beat out Jeff.

Your probably right about that. Kevon's pass coverage skills are a work in progress and he's likely not ready yet. If anyone on our roster beats out Jeff, it might be Xavier Woods, who is known to have exceptional ball skills. Chidobe Awuzie has ball skills also but has been slowed by a hamstring issue lately. He's currently listed as a CB but is said to be capable of transitioning to a safety spot.

Jeff Heath is most likely safe for the time being, at least until such time as Frazier, Woods and Chidobe are much further along in their development. Even then, Heath might be quite difficult to overcome in the area of pass coverage, as talented as those youngsters are.

The FO and the staff sound as though they're quite intent upon seeing what Jeff Heath can do as a starter. He's really come a long way from how he was rated as a rookie in the eyes of the staff, as well as many of the fans here at CZ. Right now, the job appears to be Heath's to lose.

He'll definitely make the team, but not start. I have high hopes for him and Woods. I also have high hopes for Heath though.
