Haynesworth faces paternity suit
Posted by Michael David Smith on May 26, 2010 7:29 AM ET
Washington Commanders defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth is being sued by a pregnant woman who claims that he is the father of her unborn baby and that he is refusing to support her financially.

The New York Post reports that Silvia Mena, described as a "Brooklyn exotic dancer," is nearly four months pregnant and claims in papers to be filed in Brooklyn Supreme Court that Haynesworth has refused to have any contact with her after learning she was pregnant in February.

"Haynesworth has abandoned the pregnant Silvia Mena," the court papers say. "He has refused to provide any emotional or financial support of Silvia Mena or his unborn child."

Her lawyer, Salvatore Strazzullo, told the Post, "This man is worth millions. She has had to apply for Medicaid to take care of her pregnancy."

Well he's got to protect himself in other ways to aviod this type of problem.

This guy is really an awful human being. And that's whether these allegations are true or not.

From stomping on Gurode's head to being ungrateful to the team that overpaid him tens of millions of dollars to his other 'off-field' exploits.

Just a scumbag.

The fact that he plays for the Commanders makes it that much easier to dislike him.

Wait, I am confused here. She told him in February and is 4 months pregnant now. She knew she was pregnant at 1 month?

Either the timing was real good and she took or someone is looking for a payday.

My niece knew at 2 weeks. It was revealed at an unrelated doctor's appointment. It is very rare, but it happens.

My wife knew within the first three weeks she was having our youngest. She said, "I know I'm pregnant." So we went and bought the at home test and sure enough, she was.

Went to the Dr the next day and they confirmed it with a blood test or something.

As someone who got accused of something like this from a person i had never met, i will wait to judge Haynesworth. The legal system is completely screwed up when dealing with these type of accusations. Zero protection for the guy. Any chick can make any claims they want. I mean, i had to go to court every couple of weeks for a year only to be stood up each and every time by the girl making the claim.

You could have had them file an order for an amniocentesis test.

...this raises lots of questions as to intent and the like, but if a paternity test shows he is the father there's no getting around that fact.

I believe the NFL has a rookie symposium to discuss issues like this and others that can be a real minefield for professional athletes to maneuver through. It still makes me shake my head how some of the players just don't take the information and advice given.

Stupidity is the reason. And that is what amazes me.

It's like, you are standing on the railroad tracks and the trains is coming. You hear the whistle, you feel the rumble and someone is telling you to get off the tracks, yet, you stay on the tracks. It's stupid.

...agree with you here. There is no other rational reason for some of the things these players get involved with or get caught up in.

Each and every year there is a new rookie class and each an every year there is a veteran getting himself in trouble. These are real life examples plain as the noses on their face and some still drive themselves headlong into a wall.

In the immortal words of Forrest Gump - "Stupid is as stupid does."

Yay for Sylvia Mena's bank account.

If an NFL player is that stupid he deserves the money he is going to forfeit.

Step 1. Get name in paper for 100 Mil + contract.
Step 2. Date Strippers minus good sense to avoid getting them pregnant.
Step 3. Pay said stripper for next 20 years of your LIFE!

Would you really want emotional support from Albert Haynesworth?

If I were an unmarried NFL player, I would get a vasectomy so fast. No false accusations when the gun shoots blanks.

Why these guys still dabble in unprotected sex with total strangers is beyond me. It takes no time at all to put on a rain coat. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Even if these guys like Haynesworth were not NFL players they would probably still be making the same mistakes and putting themselves in bad situations. Some people just think differently and it makes no sense to me, either.
