This is the best overall draft but the strength is in rounds 2-5 IMO. There is even really good talent late in the draft. I wouldn't call this a top heavy draft though. Your shelf life on Romo is debatable. The "Romo core" is all but gone. You need to start building for the Dez core IMO

i agree with you but to drop out of rd 1 completely i will need more picks in rounds 2-5 this year, not next year

the romo core may be gone but you build around a QB not around a WR no matter how good he is, JMO

i still think romo has 3 years (if his back is OK) at this level and that is our best chance to win something, JMO

In a heart beat. But I would need this years second as well, especially if its Johnny F on the board. Go get me Mariota next year.

Not sold on Mariota. I don't like QB's playing in spread offense. Too many short, easy passes to wide open receivers. They typically cannot read the D in the NFL unless they have a chance to sit for a year or two.

According to the Jimmy Johnson Value chart, that would not be the case.

The 16th Pick is worth 1,000 points

The 39th pick is worth 510 points.

The lowest value in the first round (pick 32) is worth 550.

The trade would net us very good to great value. Even if the Jags finish middle of the pack it would be worth it.

And if we go by Stephen Jones secret value chart it would be the second coming of the Great Train Robbery.

But in this point system you forget the "opportunity cost" factor. The 1st round pick is for NEXT yr and "points" for waiting for the entire year isn't included here.

The way I understood it to work is that a first next year is considered as the value of a second this year. Thats the adjustment for trading next years pick versus this years value wise.

You're not taking into account the fact that teams theoretically discount the value of a future year's picks by a full round. Other than that, I still agree 100% that #39 and a 2015 1st from Jax is worth parting ways with #16.

Would be dumb not to. Cowboys aren't winning anything anytime soon. But I seriously doubt Jacksonville is dumb enough to pull a stunt like that.

That is correct. A 2014 3rd is worth a 2015 2nd.

What if Jacksonville offers their 2nd round pick and next years 1st for our 1st round pick.

Do you take the bait? Keep in mind the Jags pick next year would most likely be top 5.

If not, what would it take to completely drop out of the first round?
I would like an extra pick added in 2014. Maybe a 4th or 3rd.

In a heartbeat. I would then proceed through the draft and when finished, offer the Lions our first round pick next year for SUH!

I didn't mean build around Dez that's just how I labeled the next core group of guys. I see what you mean about mariota but the beauty is he probably will sit a year if we take him.
It always depends on who falls to you. But I have a feeling we wont like whose there.

Actually, if you are trading for a pick in next years draft, the trade value of that pick is exactly 1/2 of what it would be in the current year. So, if the 32nd pick is worth 550 this year, then the actual trade value of that pick would equate to 275 pts. So, the 39th pick and a 1st next year (32nd) would be worth 785 pts.

Provided we don't see a guy we rate top 10 overall drop I would take that trade but ask for a 6th this year as well. --just to not go 40-50 picks between 5-7.

39, 47 is a nice area for talent in this class and r1 is always a nice area for talent come next year.

If we were a complete football team I'd hesitate but we are rebuilding and can use the better selection next year.

Taking a shot at a top 10 pick doesn't always pay off but it is worth the risk.

If Donald, Barr and Martin are gone, I think I would. We would still have 2 picks in the top 47, plus 2 1st rounders next year. We are two good drafts away from really competing for a Super Bowl.
I dont get where people come up with this whole the cowboys are x amount of drafts away from a superbowl. Did anybody have the Ravens pegged as anywhere near superbowl Material? until the final 3 weeks of the yr Baltimore was 1 loss away from being out of the playoffs.

If Barr and Donald are gone then I would take that trade in a heartbeat. Extremely good chance that 2015 1st rounder will be a top 5 pick.

And the year prior to that they were in the AFC championship game. The cowboys haven't come close to that, but a couple of more good drafts and they might. That was my point.
