My daughter is 15 and is going to sing in the talent show in a few months. She doesn't like pop at all - she thinks most of the pop singers are ******.

She likes to sing opera, but she did that in the last talent show. So it would be nice to find something else for her to do. She also likes to sing from musicals.

Here she is singing an opera song last year:

And here is another bit of an opera song from some play that they did at school:

And here she is at 9 doing a Mary Poppins song:

Anyway, I'm looking for something different from the typical pop stuff, whether something from the past or something off beat, that I can suggest to her. Something that fits her voice.

And if Jerry is reading this, she's available to do the National Anthem at any Cowboys games. ;)

She seems a little shy, .. a little 'unsure'.

You tell her that she is beautiful, and that she has a beautiful voice, .. and to stand up there with confidence and bust it out for everyone to hear. No holding back.

When I am coaching boys, I tell them before games to go out there and "make'em deal with you!"

You tell her that when she gets up to the microphone to "make'em deal with you!"

Like I said, she is a beautiful girl with a great voice, .. wonder if she would like to sing a Laura Brannigan song?

Something clean, classic and powerful.

Let me think on it..... :)

Maybe Gloria?

How about Linda Rondstat?
Carole King?
Carly Simon?

Or if she likes soul better, there's always Aretha or Gladys Knight.

There's a lot of good pop out there that is sort of not mainstream right now. More in the R&B/Soul arena. Might want to check out Rebecca Ferguson (totally recommend Backtrack!), Leona Lewis, Corine Bailey Rae, Joss Stone, Paloma Faith ...stuff in that vein. Might have to dig a bit for tracks, specifically, but I think that might be what you mean. Honestly, just go on Pandora and listen to one of their radio stations and explore a bit.

If she can pull off opera, id see if she could do pat bennatar, promises in the dark.

It takes a great voice to hit the first note sung in this song. :)

LOL I was actually going to post something about slayer when I read the OP.

But if his daughter sings opera style than maybe something along the lines of Iron Maiden, OLD Queensryche or maybe even some King Diamond would work better lol.

Eyes of a Stranger.

For a talent show you'd want to get something relatable.
If she wants to avoid pop crap then it probably needs to be in some sense a classic song that has been re-done to refreshen it.

I'd suggest something by Leonard Cohen like Hallelujah.

But really it needs to be a song she feels and believes in.
