Try a new cable and make sure it isn't a crossover (not saying it is just something to try).

i don't have a PS3 but the game console will just be an ignrant "gimme gimme gimme" when it comes to an IP address.

1st - what are you plugging your PS3 into? i take it since you're plugging it in you don't have a wireless router *or* simply not a WAP (wireless access point) for the client. in this instance you'd need to plug the PS3 directly into the router itself. *most* home routers allow for (4) connections to the back and (1) connection to your cable modem.

then - gonna need to be specific on where it fails and the error message. "something technical" leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to how to help you figure it out. :)

you should likely get an IP address like 192.168.0.10 with the last (2) sets of digits being just about anything which are all router specific.

if you're not sure what a crossover cable is, i doubt you have one.

basically in the old days, you couldn't hook up (2) computers directly to each other via a network cable (like you see here) why? no real good reason except to spawn router sales it seems. i'm sure there are technical reasons for it as well - but - what a crossover cable does is it simply swaps a few of the lines inside the cable to allow direct PC to PC access but it doesn't work well on standard networks because they connect to the router OF WHICH kinda makes that swap for it.

A crossover cable is a cable that allows you to connect two devices together such as two routers.

it will tell you what it is when it gives you one. again, it should be a 192.168.xxx.xxx type number, usually 0.1, 1.0, 10.1 or something like that.

it can't get an IP address and that's usually for a couple of reasons.

1) dhcp isn't on *on your router* so it can't assign one. not likely if you have multiple computers on your network and they work fine.

2) you have some form of security setup (wep 64, 128 etc) and the client isn't set offer up the proper credentials (you'd have to enter them in likely)

the 2nd error you're getting is simply upset that it can't log into the SONY network - this should resolve itself once you figure out why you're console isn't getting an IP address.

my bet is security is on somewhere and it's not the same settings on the PS3. w/o having one i can't help much more. i got my 360. : )

DHCP - dynamic host configuration protocol. basically if a computer logs onto the network, it will broadcast for a dhcp server to give it an IP address - once it gets one it will then register itself on the internet and it's DNS name (or netbios, depending on config) will register also to that IP address so you can use names, and not numbers.

to see your IP address:

start/run - in the command line - type in CMD and hit OK.

a black DOS box will come up - type "ipconfig" and hit enter and it will give you lots of great info.

try an ipconfig /all to see where it's getting it's IP address from (the computer that works).

since you're "wiring" into the router, the security may not be an issue after all - brain fart here. that's really for wireless only.

i did the ipconfig thing.
it says
ip running enabled-no
wins proxy enabled-no
etc. would it help for you to know naything else. and doesnt the ip need to be enabled? how do i enable it if so?

sounds like it - but since i don't have a PS3 i really can't help. it needs to be set to get it's IP address from a DHCP server so look for a "network config" somewhere in the menu's and turn DHCP on and i think we're closer to having you fixed up.

if i saw it i could probably help, but since i can't i can just tell you sorta what to look for.

alright. i finaly got it to say that the ip adress has succeded!!!

but internet connection has failed... many people on the ps boards say just unplug your modem and plug it back in and that it sometimes doesnt check.. but that doesnt work. should i turn the dhcp on the computer or on the playstation, i dont really understand?

and i understand you dont have a playstation, but your being very helpful i finaly got my ip adress in beucae of you. ha. if you get this working you can be in my will:lmao: . but seriulsy i appreciate it a ton.

also im buying a router soon.. im probably getting a linskys are these good? i coudl wait to get my router but i want to get on now.

***bold means i selected that one.***
alright. im gonna try to be clear, cuase i knwo i havent been to clear thus far. i go to settings adn than i go to network settings.

1.than select connection-wired-wireless
2.adress settings-easy-custom
2a.if i choose custom it says select operation mode of the network divice, in most cases auto detect. manual speed and duplex, the choices for that are
(i dont screw with any of them, i dont know what the mean)
-auto detect
-10baseT half duplex
-10baseT full duplex
-100baseTX half duplex
-100baseTX full duplex
-1,000baseT half duplex
-1,000baseT full duplex

Ip adress settings, auto, or manual. when i choose manual i finaly got the ip adress to except.
they ask for my,
IP
Subnet max
defualt router (i put in my gateway router number, is that ok?)
primary dns
secondary dns (my dns is all the same up until the last set, which is different by one number, here is an example xx.xx.xxx.xx0 and the secondary dns i put xx.xx.xxx.xx1)

than it asks for an MTU-auto-manual, if you select manual theres a set of numbers between 576-1500.

than it says proxy server-use-do not use

tha it says UPnp-enable-disable

at the end i test connection- it finds the ip address, and says connection waiting than i get the error that says an error occurred while resolving the name with sever error number (80710102)
i hope this helps, does it?

yea, you shouldn't have to manually put the IP address in.

make sure DHCP is turned on at the router and all those fields should self-populate if you put it on automatic and tell it to find the network.

if it can't find an IP address how do you know which one to put in? with IP routing you can't just put a # in there and go, it has to be part of a network and host ID.

on your computer that's hooked to the internet, go to start/run and type CMD and hit enter.

at this DOS box, type IPCONFIG /ALL and let me know:

your local IP address
is DHCP enabled?
what is the DHCP servers IP address?
what is your default gateway

and last, your IP address of your router.

ok, now i feel just silly.

how are you connecting to the internet via your computer?

modem? dial up?

what are you plugging the network card into and what are you plugging your PS3 into?

Hah - Im laughing at this thread. Its funny because you said you plugged the PS3 directly into the cable modem. I didn't read anywhere in your post that you were using a router.

Anyways - its the interface on your PS3. There are many many problems going on w/ them right now.

I took 2 back so far. I won't get another one until Sony ships again in Q2.

Good luck

D
