Hah - Im laughing at this thread. Its funny because you said you plugged the PS3 directly into the cable modem. I didn't read anywhere in your post that you were using a router.

Anyways - its the interface on your PS3. There are many many problems going on w/ them right now.

I took 2 back so far. I won't get another one until Sony ships again in Q2.

Good luck

you're right on the no mention of a router - but when i talk to people who don't know what an IP address is, i take it for granted some terminology may get mixed up. but yes, i should have clarified.

grab a wireless router when ya can.

both sides of a connection need to match. auto on both or 100 duplex or whatever they will need to match. It CAN work with auto on one side but IBM stuff (which was in on the PS3 build often does not; they have to match).

in the interim connect the ps3 directly to the cable modem and reboot everything.

see if it will grab an ip that way long enough to allow your downloading and whatnot.

rs6000 boxes(IBM created the cell processors) are notoriously picky w/ regards to networking.

dug this up ......... will require a router to be of much use i'm afraid.

Everyone has been having troubles connecting to other people on 2k7 since the release of the ps3. I have emailed 2k7 tech and they told me a couple of things to do. It has been working a lot better for me since.

First of all, you need to go into the ps3 network settings. Go to settings, then network settings and then go into settings and connection status list. Look at your ip address and remember what it is.

Next, you'll need to change some settings of your router. Your going to have to open up port udp 4658. For help with port forwarding, visit www.portforward.com and click on port forwarding at the top. It will take you through step by step for each individual router. You'll click on your router and it will ask you what game you have to open the ports for. Since nkl2k7 isn't an option, just click on any game. The only difference is the port forwarding number that you will be using. Instead of using what port they say, use port 4658. At the top of the screen, it will ask you what static ip address that you are using. The ip address that you were supposed to remember from when you were in the network settings is the static ip adress that you will be using here. There will be 3 options for the protocol: Both, udp and tcp. Use udp.

This seems to work for me. I have had very little troubles getting a game after i did this. If anyone his having troubles after this, let me know and i can hopefully help you out.
