Do you guys think Henry is making to much money to be playing FS. He is getting paid 4.8 mill next year. Anyone know how much Roy makes. Will it make them the highest paid pair of safteys. Would it make scense financially to move Henry to FS?

who cares? If we have to pay him, and we will he is under contract, and I dont see us releasing him,, then why not play him in the best position for the benefit of the team? Bledsoe might have been the highest paid back up in the league this year.. but so what.. that is where he belonged.

Now it would be different if Henry wasn't already on the team, and we were looking at bringing him in for FS.. but since he is already here,, and if that is the spot he most helps this team be successful.. then do it, period.

by the way.. didn't he play FS one play against the lions? If i remember right, he played FS and broke up a pass in the endzone,, I wonder why they jsut did that for that one play.. seems strange.

Henry needs to stay at cornerback. It's not like we're gonna go out and spend big money to get a quality #2 guy, and drafting someone might help speed wise, but learning corner as a rookie is one of the harder things to do. Just remember, when Henry is healthy he can be a very productive player. He is the best option as a #2 DB that we have.

I think he's too good in coverage to play FS. It so much harder to find a FS. We don't have one b/c we haven't invested crap in the position.

How about a corner that isn't over the age of 30? Henry's not getting any younger or better.

In the end this lineup...

1st Rounder/Henry/Roy/Newman

...looks much better than this one...

Henry/Watkins/Roy/Newman

By the way, to answer the OP's question, Henry has a base of $3.6 million next year, but it goes down to $2.6 million for the following two years. His signing bonus of $9 million is prorated over the 5 year contract, so he'll count a little over $5 million against the cap next season. Steep, for a safety, but like I said, it goes down after next year.

ive read some of your posts before and you seem to know the game well...but think about it. our scheme is so flawed, and there is no pass rush that even though we have the pieces to be successful, but it doesnt matter how good they are if our front 7 continues to play as it has.
how many times have we given the qb ample time to throw, not jam receivers at the line disrupting timing, not come up with creative blitzes, things of that nature.
we are doing nothing to help our secondary. we need to change a few other things on the defense, but the secondary isnt one of them, in my opinion.

Well, there are a lot of pass-rushing 'tweeners that will be available around our first pick. I assume we'll either go with a 1st round LOLB and a free agent cornerback or a 1st round cornerback and free agent LOLB (A. Thomas). Or we could go with 1st and 2nd round picks being corner and LOLB. Either way, Jerry has already stated that we're going to focus on defense in the draft.

That is assuming Bill comes back and Ellis doesn't. In the end we may leave the defense exactly as it was when we ended the season. By all accounts it was one of the worst in the league at that point.

Henry's cap numbers are $5.6 million for each of the next three seasons.

But really, at this point, cap numbers aren't much of an issue because so many teams (including us) will have a ton of cap space and not many people to spend it on. He already got his signing bonus ($10 million), so that money has been paid and will count against the cap no matter what. So the only question is whether he's worth the other $3.6 million he'll be paid in each of the next three seasons (he has $1 million roster bonuses in 2008 and 2009).

Gotcha. Was unaware of the $1 MM roster bonuses. What on earth was the point of putting the $1 MM in roster bonuses rather than base salary?

He gets paid that amount earlier -- or if we're not going to pay him, he gets to become a free agent earlier.

This year, we could keep him up until the final cutdown, then cut him and not pay him a dime. And he could sign with someone else then, but most teams would have pretty much set their rosters and/or spent most of their money. So he'd be scrounging for a job and a decent salary (relatively speaking).

If we have to pay him a $1 million roster bonus, say on March 10, then we'd have to decide whether to pay it or let him go then. If we pay it, then we're pretty much committed to keeping him, or we'd have paid $1 million for nothing. And if we let him go, then he has the entire offseason to try to sign with someone else before the money's gone.

We sure can keep him at corner.

But then again, we actually want to win some more football games in 2007.

Considering what we gave up at FS this year, putting Henry at FS seems to be a no brainer. We can scrape around and probably find someone that can do the job at #2 CB that will help the D more then leaving Henry at CB and playing the toasted ones we have at FS.
