This is one of the most team friendly contracts I've ever seen. The Cowboys were pretty aggressive with this, and obviously due to his off the field issues and his injury from last year.

It strikes me Melton was looking for 9-10 million per year, and no teams were biting.

I suggested that Melton would sign with the Cowboys for a 1 year 5 million dollar deal, and I was on the money on that. Even better though, the Cowboys got a club option that keeps him here at pro bowl rates if he plays like a pro bowler. It's a win win for us. Worst case scenario he is a free agent next year, and we can readdress this in the draft.

I don't think we draft a 3 tech early after this. You have to get your defensive ends now, and now you can also get a linemen. If we get another year after Waters, I think that would be really helpful. We might also be able to add a defensive end after the draft once we get some of that cap space from releasing Austin.

As I said earlier, getting Melton would be the cornerstone of our defensive makeover and the crux of our off season. I didn't want them to overpay for him, and it looks like they got a home run of a deal. Hopefully we don't have a holdout situation, but if all turns out well, we'll have Melton til he is 31.

agree with you on the contract but dont agree at all on the draft strategy
the 3t is the engine of this defense and as you said, this is a 1 year deal
what happens if he underperforms, gets injured/does not heal properly, or has off field issues? we have a poor defense all year and are in the same predicament next year

we still need a 3T early in the draft

1 contract does not a roster make ... come on. They did okay here ... lets see the stupid money come out to resign #88.

Waiting for typical response to this with the "cap hell" in future years clause in it.

This contract is Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes! The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!

(there, feel better?)

It's a one or two year deal. I don't see this precluding us drafting a DT high in the draft. JMO

Great contract. Could be the framework for a deal with Spencer as well.

Easy to lower 2014 cap hit with unlikely to be earned incentives(that are actually very likely met) because both guys missed much of 2013.

No... it's a 1 or 4 year deal, 2 isn't an option.

All that said, it doesn't preclude drafting a DL considering we need 8 and have about 6 now.

In the NFL you don't really have the luxury to double up for depth. We have entirely too many holes for that.

No, I don't think that's right. He has 5 Million if he reaches incentives this year. If he's on the team by x date of 2015, then he is guaranteed 9 Million in 2015. No mention of any other guaranteed money or future signing bonus that I can see. That would mean that it's either a 1 or 2 year deal, unless there is more information that I have not yet seen.

My understanding is that Woy offered this same contract to other teams, kudos to JJ for taking this contract when others wouldn't.

Yep. That JJ is a shrewd guy. Best GM in the game. So who do you suggest we cut next year to keep Melton?
