No, I don't think that's right. He has 5 Million if he reaches incentives this year. If he's on the team by x date of 2015, then he is guaranteed 9 Million in 2015. No mention of any other guaranteed money or future signing bonus that I can see. That would mean that it's either a 1 or 2 year deal, unless there is more information that I have not yet seen.

sigh.. this isn't hard.

he has a 1 year deal up to 5m.
then if on the roster next year his 9m guarantee kicks in AS DOES 3 more years.

the team will not guarantee him 9 mil next year then cut him after the one year. that's fairly illogical and basically stupid.

~ the way the deal will look:
2014 5m total
2015 8mil SB 1m base
2016 6m base
2017 8m base

You don't know that. The team could do a lot of things. It depends on what you have available in cap space and personnel. You have no clue what the team is or is not going to do in two years.

Are you now trying to suggest that this team has not committed to stupid moves over the last several years? I can only infer that this is what you are suggesting because I know you would never suggest that I or anybody else on this board is stupid right?

No... it's a 1 or 4 year deal, 2 isn't an option.

All that said, it doesn't preclude drafting a DL considering we need 8 and have about 6 now.

I thought that, too, but that's not right. Dallas has an option every year of the deal.

Waiting for the "Blind squirrel finding a nut every so often" or "the sun shines on dog's *** sometimes." Etc....

Even a broken watch is right twice a day . . . .

Just had to add fuel to the fire . . . . :D

Yep. That JJ is a shrewd guy. Best GM in the game. So who do you suggest we cut next year to keep Melton?

#salarycapstillexists

That's a really....really...bad point.

This is a very friendly contract and cutting Ware and Austin is taking a lot of pressure off of the cap in the next few years, not to mention it's expected to be raised to $160 million by 2016.

Carry on.

you are clearly a genius whose take here makes complete sense.

i am sure in a day or so when numbers are released what you say will be validated and what I suggest will be a million miles off....

next year Melton will count about 4m on cap.

A one year rental for a Ok player. Great. I am not knocking it because we needed bodies, but people are acting like this is the greatest signing of all time. The guy really has not done much in the NFL and is coming of a major injury. 8 mil in 2015 is a stupid amount of money. At least the last asinine contract JJ gave to DT will be off the books by then.

Well. Let's wait until next year gets here to make that decision. I'm sure they'll be someone we can cut. Especially if it means were doing so because Melton had a good year and was a valuable addition to the team.

We really won't know a thing until the contract clears the NFLPA. It will be an open book anyway. I seriously don't think they will guarantee him for money he has not made yet, but we will see . . . .

My big concern is the base salary. That is what's going to count on this years cap. IIRC, the bonuses won't count until next year if he reaches them. I am just assuming here, but I would figure the bonuses would be number of snaps, playing time, number of sacks, etc. If it's a low base salary (2-3 million) then this was a great deal for Dallas and gives them a "look see." If for whatever reason they don't like him, then they cut him before start of next season and move on.

Not bad. Gotta give Jerry credit on this one. But like I said, even a broken watch is right twice a day . . . .

Nice to be acknowledge. Thank you.

When numbers are released and if those numbers suggest something else, that's fine. As of now, what has been released is a maximum of 5 Million in 2014 and if he is on the roster on the first day of the league year in 2015, he is guaranteed 9 Million in 2015. Agreed.
I would have been against a big deal here but the contract was right IMHO.

Any issues at all you can walk away after one year or restructure.
I expect a cap hit of no more than 2m for a solid starting DT.
I do not think we are getting a Pro Bowl level DT though.
If teams believed that he wouldn't have signed this deal.

No, that's true. We really don't know.

I don't think it's a great contract, per say. I think it provides a great deal of flexibility to see if Melton is healthy and if he's still the same kind of player he was before the injury but I honestly believe the deal with Hatcher the Commanders put in place is better.

I'm just wondering why we didn't give more consideration to Hatcher? I wonder if Marinelli didn't like him as much? Hard to imagine with the kind of season he had last year but it's very possible I suppose.

Thing is, Hatcher got $27 million for one year of great work after playing here for 8 years. Now Hatcher appears to be more durable than Melton since he has not missed any significant playing time, but that's a lot of money for a player who flashed for one year.

My guess is Melton wanted Hatcher money. Other teams wanted to give him a similar "look see" deal, and he was not going to get 8-10 million coming off an injury that kept him out most of last season. So he figured he may as well play close to home if that was the deal he was going to get. Just a guess . . .

Not a bad deal by Jerry and company. If he turns out to be a bad signing and they decide to cut him at the end of this season will there be any dead money involved or are the Cowboys only on the hook for up to 5 million as long as he is cut by the deadline?

Might be a simple answer but I don't like numbers and they don't like me.

Just looked at OvertheCap.com and they show the top 51 players (minus the new Melton contract) at $111 million. Not too bad, but Dez and Tyron are due for big $$$. Witten and Free are major issues salary cap wise in 2015. This may be the last year for Witten.

Don't use up all the genius in one post.

Lots of teams only guarantee a SB (which essentially occurs here in year 2).
That does mean it is a 1 year deal... nor that this is a 2 year deal.

This is a 1 or 4 year deal period.
They certainly could release him as they did Ratliff early and unexpectedly but only at a huge cap hit when they would get a discount to keep the player.

Again the 9m guaranteed divided by 3 leaves 6m in cap allocation which also probably equals his year 3 salary... so it would cost about the same to keep him or cut him year 3. Thus there is really no logical way this is a 2 year deal. It is irrational to suggest this is a two year deal and I am very confident you will in fact be the only person to ever suggest that.
