IMO, that will be a good thing. Roy is still popular with the fans and in the community. The haters just don't like him. Believe me, Valley Ranch wants him to return to his old form. They aren't waiting to unload him.
Plus, I don't think that they really want to sign Hamlin long term. He is just an insurance policy for Roy.
Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to have Roy return to his old form, I just think that that particular scenario is going to make the decision making process that much more convoluted.
I disagree about Hamlin though. His impact went beyond just the plays that he made. He actually became a leader of that unit when vets that were already on the team (Williams, Newman, Henry) failed miserably in doing so before Hamlin ever arrived. I honestly believe they would cut Williams loose before they would cut Hamlin loose. I think that's why they franchised Hamlin, to be honest. I think they are giving Williams another year to get back to form AND to minimize the cap implications when he is released. At that time Hamlin will given a large deal.
Hamlin may not be all-world, but he's rarely out of position and when he's beaten it's more likely on a physical level than a mental one. Roy is just the opposite. His mental errors and bad angles leave his physical attributes worthless on certain plays. It's also theorized that Williams' mental errors are what puts him in the position to where his last line of defense is the dreaded "horse collar" tackle. I think any coach would prefer a player that will combine his physical attributes with a better thinking process over a player that is physically more imposing but has more mental lapses.
