I really think we are covering our bases for letting Henry go next year and not Newman.

Newman may have seemed a bit concerned about the signing of Pacman and probably a bit more by drafting 2 corners, thinking that jerry does not want to pay him but I think it will be Henry that will be going if these choices turn out the way they hope.

Yes Henry will likely be gone.
He is injury prone and likely will break down as he ages.

If he can move to safety, those nagging injuries won't be as limiting at safety as they are at CB... Big If though, I'd expect by the end of this yr if he isn't taking a few snaps at safety then that's not going to happen.

good...he has given us all he has...and he is not FS material in my opinion...he would be terrible with WRs coming at him full speed

Why does any quality player have to leave?

Just a matter of Cap dollars - Henry will earn about 7 mill over the last two years.(which is really not bad mind you) I just think he will be the casualty if we sign Newman to a long term deal.

Henry will be the FS next year with Hamlin sliding over to his more natural position of SS.

if they can't keep both then the choice would be to use Henry's cap savings to use on Newman. That I agree with, but Henry might still be kept because its really a pretty good deal now.

He's played 1.5 seasons as a Cowboy. He's always good for 8 games.

Henry might have to be our FS in '09 if we don't sign Hamlin to a long-term deal.

I think the staff likes Henry -- but he'd need to redo his deal

The real problem is going to be if Roy Williams becomes the catalytic player he was earlier in his career under the watch of Campo. That's when we are going to have some tough decisions.

IMO, that will be a good thing. Roy is still popular with the fans and in the community. The haters just don't like him. Believe me, Valley Ranch wants him to return to his old form. They aren't waiting to unload him.

Plus, I don't think that they really want to sign Hamlin long term. He is just an insurance policy for Roy.

If Pacman is re-instated and Jenkins/Scandrick are ready to be 3rd and 4th CBs this year I would try and trade Henry for a 3rd or 4th to some team unhappy with their CB position.

In order to keep salaries reasonable we have to develop the habit of trading some of our vets for picks when we have sufficient depth at a position.

Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to have Roy return to his old form, I just think that that particular scenario is going to make the decision making process that much more convoluted.

I disagree about Hamlin though. His impact went beyond just the plays that he made. He actually became a leader of that unit when vets that were already on the team (Williams, Newman, Henry) failed miserably in doing so before Hamlin ever arrived. I honestly believe they would cut Williams loose before they would cut Hamlin loose. I think that's why they franchised Hamlin, to be honest. I think they are giving Williams another year to get back to form AND to minimize the cap implications when he is released. At that time Hamlin will given a large deal.

Hamlin may not be all-world, but he's rarely out of position and when he's beaten it's more likely on a physical level than a mental one. Roy is just the opposite. His mental errors and bad angles leave his physical attributes worthless on certain plays. It's also theorized that Williams' mental errors are what puts him in the position to where his last line of defense is the dreaded "horse collar" tackle. I think any coach would prefer a player that will combine his physical attributes with a better thinking process over a player that is physically more imposing but has more mental lapses.
