Here you go Jerry

Here is my formula for fixing the Dallas Cowboys. I magically made billions in the oil business, and have made such an offer to Jerry that he couldn't refuse. So, I'm the new owner, and here I go.

#1 - I am going to hire the best people money can buy for every leadership position in the organization outside of my own. With the money and influence that the Dallas Cowboys possess there is zero excuse for B grade and C grade people in any role. I am going to do my due diligence and then I'm hiring the best GM candidate I can find, and the best coach I can get. I may even conduct a Cowboyszone poll before I do each. ;) ;)

#2 - My head coach will hire his own staff from top to bottom and it will be made clear that players are accountable to the head coach. The head coach and GM will answer to me, but the players no longer have a direct line to the owner, plain and simple. Other than for special occasions I am staying out of the locker room and off the sidelines. I own the team, the GM builds the team and the coach coaches the team. I get to enjoy the winning.

#3 - We are going to be committed to CHARACTER at every level. If a guy is a whiner, quitter, selfish, loser, he's not going to be in the organization, REGARDLESS of who he is. I might bring in Michael Irvin to make a list for me ;)

#4 - The Dallas Cowboys are going to celebrate our history like never before. It will be made plain that we are the New York Yankees of the NFL. (Actually better than that) Drew Pearson will immediately go into the ring of honor along with others who deserve to be there. The Roger Staubachs and Troy Aikmans and Emmitt Smiths and Michael Irvins and Moose Johnstons and Darren Woodsons etc, etc, will be around my team (as the head coach allows), and the current players will realize what made the Cowboys great.

#5 - No one denies that making money is important to me. Football is a business. But no longer are we aiming at producing a playoff team. We are aiming at producing multiple championships. We will be satisfied with nothing less. We will remember 25 straight winning seasons, and all of the division and conference championships we have won, and our 5 Super Bowl titles. WE ARE NOT THE ARIZONA CARDINALS. We are not the New Orleans Saints. We are the Dallas Cowboys and if we can't get it right we won't stop until we do get it right. In other words, FOOTBALL FIRST. Not marketing, not reality TV shows, not all the trinkets we can sell, AND NOT ME THE OWNER. Football, winning, tradition, this is what matters.

Ok.... my dream has ended. I wish Jerry would wake up and make commitments like these. I don't remember who said it, it may have been Jimmy Johnson, but it was something like this. It isn't that Jerry doesn't know what to do to fix the problems, it is that he isn't willing to do it because he wants to be in the middle of it all.

Yep, no doubt.

On your last quote, I thought you were going to go with the one where Jerry told Jimmy, "You know how you told me once that your last thought before you fall asleep and your first thought when you wake up is 'How can I make my football team better'? Well I'm the same way... Except my first and last thought 'How can I make more money?'"

Beautiful!

An inspiring post at a time when we could use it.

Well done!

Wow. What a telling quote that is. I hadn't heard that one before, but it sure comments on where we continue to be.

Inspiring? Without any specific details?

"I am going to hire the best football guys at every position, regardless of cost and they will get along."

That isn't inspiring, it's a fantasy.

It's better than the reality of this mess.

Or the thought of Jason Garrett getting the job.

I took it to mean hiring the best candidates, not the guys the owner is comfortable with.

Are best candidates allowed to have names?

Most definitely.

And that would have been better.

But I felt his heart was in the right place and for a brief moment it made me feel better about my favorite team.

And for that, I thank him.

The reason it is vague, Hos, is that I don't pretend, doing my work here in Houston, Texas, to know who those best people are at the moment. The Dallas Cowboys are not my way of making a living. But I guarantee you this. If they WERE my way of making a living, I would find out who those people are and hire them.

And, please hear me say this, I don't pretend that anyone would bat .1000 on that any more than Jerry has. But what is missing, on Jerry's part, is that he isn't looking for the BEST person, he is looking for HIS person. And HIS person has to put up with the Jeriaonics that have become part and parcel of the Dallas Cowboys.

So, if you have the billions to donate to me, and give me a month or two at the helm, I'll have a more specific list for you. ;)

At times I feel like people think football is like Legos or Lincoln logs.

Just stack it and it will become something.

99.99% of us have no idea the qualifications, input, amount of control, or dynamics of any front office in the NFL, but Fantasy Football and Madden have allowed us room to sit back and assume we do.

Can any of you tell me for 100% certainty who the best football guy in the world is?

If you can, great. Now tell me who he is employed by, how he got unemployed, or how you can guarantee he will not come in here with an ego and ruin what we have that is good.

That would be "inspiring." Until then it is lip service.

By the way, Hos, I have prayed for your mom, and you. I know this is a difficult time, and I am grateful for a son who cares for his parents. In this day and age, unfortunately, that is becoming increasingly rare.

Yes, I believe his name is Bill Belichick. He is currently unavailable though.

You are a sharp cookie, so I'm sure you haven't missed the point of my post. It isn't that anyone always knows who those people are. Nor is it that whoever is in charge would always find the right person. The point is, WHAT IS DRIVING MY SEARCH? I think a very large portion of the Cowboys fanbase, and a very large portion of NFL fans as a whole, perceive that Jerry Jones is not just about winning, he is about winning HIS WAY.

He brings in strong football people, things get better, he goes with guys that allow him (Jerry) to be the face of the franchise, and to undercut the authority of the head coach, and down, down, down we go again.

Maybe you are right and we are all wrong. Its possible. But then again, maybe you are wrong on this one. I happen to think you are.

Either way, none of us can change a darn thing about it. It is what it is.

Thus my post was presented in the form of a dream scenario.

How is it negative to ask for a real plan not a mantra?

"I would hire the best football guys."

Oh boy, great idea.

See, I absolutely agree with this. Success is when oportunity meets availability.

Arrange it so that we can get Hoodie at the same time he is looking for a job.
