Kap got his team to the Super Bowl and NFC-CG in his first two years as starter. What has Romo done?

"Football is a team sport. Quarterbacks don't win or lose games on their own."

Write that down 1,000 times on a chalkboard. Maybe it'll sink in and you'll finally grasp that elementary concept.

I would argue playoff games are bigger.

It is how a QB is measured to a large degree. That's not me requiring that measurement. That's the league and HOF , and other fans across the nation , since it started....

Playoff games are bigger and every game played is a big game.

I don't see our offense being able to do anything against Seattle's D.

I think it could certainly do as good or better than the 49ers offense. And since they took the Seahawks to the last minute in their stadium, I'd like our chances with an average defense.

Those two QBs are frauds with a great supporting cast.

And the year before Kap did it, Alex Smith did it. Hmm...

yup. Alex smith.............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Makes you think, if you can build a Defense "That" Strong, you could get "any" promising young QB, pay him peanuts, and still be a contender???

A lot of truth to this post.

Take, for example, the coaching tenure of Chan Gailey.

10- 6 division champs
8-8 with playofff birth

Then shown the door, presumably because Jerry believed, at that time, that we should be competing for championships, not merely playoff births.

I would be ecstatic with that now a days.

Disagree. Qb's can lose games on their own. No doubt about it. And great qb's elevate their play when needed to pull out games. That's why they are paid so much more than any other position. There are other things that factor in, but good qb play is most essential.

It may not be that simple, .. but you are starting to understand how important a good defense is. And what a difference it makes for a QB.

The one achilles heel of Pete Carroll defenses over the years has been the mobile QB. The only sustained success SF had in that game was when Kaepernick took off and ran.

Romo obviously is not a threat to run. Factor in how bad our offense usually looks on the road and I can't see where we would be able to move the ball consistently at all in Seattle. We aren't a physical team like SF is and we probably wouldn't have much success running on them even if we did commit to it. We're a completely finesse offense and after these guys get hit in the mouth a few times by Seattle's D, they would fold just like we did last year in Seattle. Their pass rush would just tee off on Romo and our WR's would struggle to get open. We would be lucky to even score one TD if the game was in Seattle.

At home we would have a little better chance, but not much.

The only reason people are bringing up the 49er defense is because people are "touting" Kap. The point has never been Romo has to have the best defense in the league but I can assure you a defense better than #32 overall would help.

I challenge you to go look at the defenses that have won Super Bowls. You will find for the most part they are top 10 type defenses and in the cases where they were not top 10 but they sure turned it on in the playoffs. Look no further than E Manning. Every time he has won a Super Bowl his defense has held the opposing team to 20 points or less (20, 20, 17, 17, 17, 14, 14, and 2).

Aaron Rodgers has gone 1 and done in the playoffs on 3 separate occasions and in 2012 won a wild card game but lost in the divisional round. The one time he made a run at the Super Bowl his defense was rated #2 in points and #5 in yards.

Ben R has never made the playoffs when his defense was not rated in the top 10.

Defense matters...it really is that simple. For whatever reason, Dallas cannot put together a defense.

i agree. it does. and its a shame the Dallas cowboys organization couldn't , allocate more resources the defense, to give Romo all he needs to win a divisional playoff game.

becuase. it is holding him back. He can't get it done without help.

WV Cowboy. Trust me. I understood that 20 years ago. And your post is a little condenscing.

Now. JJ made a mistake. one of a gazillion. In "betting" on Romo. This is an offensive team.......its been built that way....largely due to the promise of Romo.....

but i will say this. I may have just made that same 'Bet"......

there is no reason you cannot 'bet' on romo and still build a dominant defense/team that can compete for real championships consistently

1) starts with hiring a GM and realizing that you (jerry) are not competent to evaluate NFL talent
2) then hire a real HC (with the GM) and let him hire his staff
3) footbal is a game that is largely decided at the line of scrimmage, unless your OL and DL/front 7 are the strength of your team, you will not win consistently... therefore allocate resources appropriately
4) real depth is not a luxury, it is a necessity if you intend to play 18-19 games. plan accordingly.
5) finesse only gets you so far, you have to be a physical football team

it is not difficult, our faux GM just chooses to make it so because his priorities lie elsewhere and not in building a wining football team

A QB can blow a game, that's for certain, but so can other players. Ask Leon Lett. A WR can blow a game by tipping a pass that he should catch, or he could fumble. A running back can fumble. A kicker can miss a chip shot field goal or even an extra point. A punter can shank a punt, giving the opponent great field position. There are too many examples to name, but the truth remains. It's a team sport, and almost any player could lose the game via a screwup. The quarterback is most visible because he handles the ball on every play and hence his mistakes are under the microscope.

I agree with every point.....

But i think teams are struggling to field both sides of the ball.....so, they pick their strength and go with it,,,,,,,salary cap and FA and other things have made it that way . That's just my observation.......May or may not be totally accurate.

I got that the Cowboys are nowhere near ready to compete with the likes of SF and SEA. Those defenses are ferocious and we're going to see them both up close next year. Possibly in week 1 if Seahawks win SB.
