Here's what I hope happens to Jason Garrett in the off-season...

JG is probably the hottest candidate to be the next head coach of a number of teams. A top 3 candidate at the very least...

Any number of teams could come calling...

NYG - (Coughlin is dull and unimaginative)
Miami - (Cam will probably get another shot due to first year status)
NYJ - (never know about fickle NY teams)
Baltimore - (Billick's offensive genius run is about over)
Cinci - (will CJ stay? does Marvin Lewis have what it takes to get queen city to SB?)
Washington - ducking (never know about Danny Boy, he likes the bright and shiny toys, a former Cowboy OC went there as well.)
SD - (Norv just not a very good HC)
Oakland - (First year HC is OK, but you can't count out Al Davis making noise in coaching ranks)

Here is what I think will happen...

A GM from any of those teams comes calling... "Coach Garrett, how about you being our next head coach, I really admire the work you've done in Dallas this season."

Garrett responds... "Well sir, I really appreciate the offer, but I've only been OC for a season and I'd really like to cut my teeth a little more at this position before moving on to a head coaching job. I'm comfortable for the time being, but thanks so much for the offer."

Jones responds... "Jason my boy, I appreciate your loyalty, I'm going to raise your salary to the highest paid OC in the league... Stephen, what does Saunders make?"

Anyway, Dallas looks like they will be playing deep into the playoffs and the HC jobs will most likely be filling up during the post season as they do year in and year out.

I can really see this scenario playing out. However this will depend on what happens at the end of the season, SB win and we could lose JG if a HC job stays open. SB loss and most likely Garrett stays.

I think Jerry should sign Garrett to a contract that guarantees him the HC job when Wade departs. I don't want Garrett to bolt.

This is what I've been saying for some time now. I think JJ wants to open that new stadium with his new young offensive genius head coach. Garrett needs one more year calling plays and learning a little more about running Wade's 3-4 defense and he will set to take over.

You simply CAN NOT offer an OC a contract that promises the HC job while you've got a current HC, especially if he's winning.

That is completely unprofessional and I'm willing to bet it's against a few rules as well.

I'm definitely for a hand-shake deal and a promise in a closed meeting room, but to put anything on paper would make us the equivalant of the Charger's front office, which is a disaster zone.

Wade is on the other side of 60, I can't believe Jerry would let Jason leave.

Make him Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator until WP retires.

Troy Aikman said a couple of weeks ago that money doesn't motivate Garrett in regards to staying here. He also said that though Jason is a Cowboy at heart, he really enjoyed living in Manhattan. Aikman said he would be a HC in the NFL next year...

Take it for what it's worth but it sounds like he may be interested in the NYFG job should it come open...

It doesn't matter what Jones offers if Garrett is eyeing a HC gig as soon as he could get one, regardless of circumstance. We don't know what his desires are, perhaps Cowboys HC job, perhaps any HC job next year. I'm pretty sure his goal is to become a HC of an NFL team, the question is, is will he be willing to wait it out for Cowboys job or is he impatient guy who wants to be a HC next year.

If he is offered a HC job, he's obviously going to need to bring in his own staff, unless he wants to use someone else's. I don't know how much networking he's established with other coaches, but trying to piece together a good staff is a big battle in itself.

The ideal situation would be for him to stay onboard for at least another season and continue his success. He's got time - those coaching vacancies are going to come and go.

I am absolutely convinced Garrett is a head coach in the NFL next year and there is nothing Jerry can say or do that will make Garrett turn those offers down - short of Wade outright retiring.

The NYG HC job is a plum job. There may well be other equally attractive jobs that open up.

Is Garrett's resume a bit thin? Absolutely! But I think the intrigue around this guy outweighs that inexperience by a mile. There are always folks out there willing to take a risk if the potential payoff is big enough and I think Garrett has more appeal in that area than any NFL coordinator has had in a good long while. Your talking about the chance to hire a young Tom Landry folks - GASP! Yes, I said it.

Been predicting this outcome since early in the season when people were chastizing me for it. Well, now that Garrett's success has been on full display for 12 regular season games the jig is up.

I am hardly ever outspoken or brash on predictive issues. Anything but. But Garrett is not going to wait around for Wade to retire (and why in the world would Wade want to anytime soon) when there are very attractive jobs to be had right now.

We're dreaming if we think Garrett is going to wait of his own choosing.

I am fully prepared, and anxious to eat crow on this prediction. Sadly, I don't believe I will.

I would not mind bring Norv back as OC if Jason leaves.

I suspect the first offer would be to Sparano. I believe he is a quality consolation prize for us. However, I have also read that he is garnering interest as well for HC jobs at the college level. We know Payton wanted him.

Its truly scary to think of losing both Garrett & Sparano in one offseason - very scary.

He's not turning water into wine in Dallas. He should be smart enough to realize he's not going to come close to this sort of production anywhere else, unless he can get the San Diego job.

I'm hoping the giants make the playoffs to keep Coughlin there because I could see that being too attractive a job to turn down. A few of the others are iffy. Cincy will probably be looking for a new coach but they are a well known cheap organizations and the run ins with the law by players on that team are known by all.
SD will fire Norv unless they pull an upset in the playoffs and that could be attractive as well with LT there and a chance to correct whatever happened to Rivers this year. Baltimore could pop up but that is an aging team with a disasterous offense. Miami has roots with Jason but most likely won't change. What about Philly?

That is absolutely right.

You can sit down with Garrett and Wade and talk about the future, etc.

This will get very interesting -- I've heard several times that Jerry's plan originally involved hiring Garrett to work under BP for a year and then take over in 2008

I realize Dallas O has some serious talent. But frankly so do many teams around this league. I don't think our talent is head & shoulders above other teams out there. But I do think the difference is our OC.

We have games where we struggle for a half, and then the floodgates open. It very much reminds me of the Landry era where halftime adjustments were very visible in 2nd half results.

How many OC's have we had through here who claimed they were going to be revolutionary in lining WR's up all over the place to prevent defenses from keying & stopping them and us. I've heard years of big promises. Garrett has delivered and he's done it with Patrick Crayton as our #2 folks and last week with Sam Hurd as our #2. With all due respect they are not overwhelming talents.

And maybe most of all I love how Garrett delivers in the clutch. Time after time after time. Sure Romo and the other players have a lot to say about that. But not if the OC doesn't give them a play that can be converted.

Sorry to rant. I just think there is a very definitive intrigue around Garrett that is well worth someone taking a perhaps premature HC risk on.

I'd hate to see him go, but like I was saying, I really think it depends on how far Dallas goes in the post season... IF... Dallas wins the SB, that's one helluva star on the ol' OCs resume.

The NYFG job just aint very sexy. On the other hand, the Cowboys are shining bright and is always a sexy job.
