KANSAS CITY -- Kansas City Chiefs coach Herm Edwards was fired Friday, a well-placed source told ESPN.

Edwards was 15-33 in three seasons with the Chiefs, including 2-14 this season.

The Chiefs have been in negotiations to land Mike Shanahan as their next coach and a deal is near, league sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Edwards' status has been in doubt since the Chiefs hired Scott Pioli as their general manager on Jan. 13. Asked at his introductory news conference about Edwards' status, Pioli declined to say.

He was 41-44 in five seasons as head coach of the New York Jets, including three trips to the playoffs.

Edwards came to Kansas City from the Jets and made the playoffs in his first season,w hen the team was 9-7. But he was under fire after the team finished 4-12 in 2007. Team management gave him its support, but expected a run at the playoffs. Instead, the team went 2-14, leaving Edwards' fate up in the air.

Friday, Pioli fired him.

REPORT: CHIEFS NEAR DEAL WITH SHANAHAN

Posted by Mike Florio on January 23, 2009, 5:19 p.m.

On the same day that a former Broncos coach made a big stir by unexpectedly arising as a candidate for offensive coordinator in San Fran, another former Broncos coach is also potentially resurfacing in an unexpected place.

On Thursday, we pointed out that there were increasing rumors and reports of the Chiefs possibly hiring former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.

The rumors and reports were knocked down in various circles.

Now, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that the Chiefs are close to a deal with Shanahan.

Wow.

More to come.
wow...

Wow! I mean, the Chiefs haven't been winning, it's true, but that was a very bad football team he started with.

Well, I'd think about him as a HC. He might be a real good coach for a young team who needs discipline.

Actually, Mortenson is saying Shanahan.

:bang2:

I thought he wasn't going to coach until 2010?

He just told Schefter that last week.

I think he's a terrible head coach.

Damn Jerry if he signs there.

If Shanahan is who Jerry has targeted does KC being interested force his hand this year.
