Walker was a phenomenal athlete. He had Olympic speed to go with his size and strength. I think that was one of his problems and why he didn't become one of the all time greats. I notice that those guys that are considered beast athletes are great players but they never get elevated to one of the all time greats.
Perhaps it came to easy to them. I also think that they tend to be involved in a variety of things, often involving themselves in more than one sport like Bo Jackson. In many cases they lack the heart to focus everything they have on the one sport. I don't believe that Walker truly loved the game of football and it showed at times.
He was into wrestling early in his Cowboys career. He was also a little quirky. One offseason, he talked about not playing for the Cowboys because her wanted to a an FBI agent. LOL, somehow he ended up being an "honorary agent" and was even given a badge. I'm thinking Tex Shram might have been involved in that.
When Walker came to the team and formed the "dynamic duo" with Tony Dorsett, it looked like the Cowboys were a shoo in for the Super Bowl in 1986. They stood 6-2 midway through the season, ranked #2 in total yards, #1 in rushing TD's. But then Danny White got hurt, a few close games went the other way and they went 1-7 during the second half, ending a 20 season winning streak and the end of Tom Landry a few seasons later.
