I've heard that the condition was that he had to be on the 53 man roster for 10 games.

Xwalker, I have a question for you - in thinking about cutting Edwards/bringing up Smith (I believe Rolando will not play this week). It got me thinking about other players - Amobi Okoye to be precise. Have not heard or seen anything on him lately. Was he IR'd (think so) for the season ? Do you know anything about his status, or heard any rumors etc. - meaning, can he train etc. He is one player I would love to see make it back. I know we signed him to a 2 year deal. Thanks in advance.

Okoye is on the NFI (Non Football Injury) list. It's basically the same rules at the PUP.

PUP / NFI Rules:

1st 6 weeks: Cannot practice or play. Can lift weights, attend meetings, etc..
After 6 weeks: Can start practicing anytime within the next 5 weeks. Could play as early as week 7.
After 1st practice: The team has an additional 3 weeks before the player must either be activated on the 53 or placed on IR.

Summary: The player's 1st game back could be as early as week 7 or as late as week 14.

I don't know Okoye's medical status. He was in a medically induced coma for 3 months back in 2013. He's apparently completely recovered from that condition, but is still working on getting back into football condition. He was reported to have lost as much a 80 pounds during his illness.

I expect we are pulling the 54 man roster trick. I don't recall fully but I believe Edwards get most if not all of this week's salary. If we want him back, it is far more convenient for him to come back Tuesday and tell other teams he wants to stay in Dallas

He has to pass through waivers because he is not a vested veteran. If anybody wanted him on their 53 he has no say in the matter. If he clears waivers, then he can choose whose practice squad he wants to join if he gets multiple offers.

They could have made Anthony Spencer the 54th roster guy if they had cut him to start the season, but had made a deal with him to get paid while not on the team. As a vested veteran he could turn down any offers he might have received, although in his case I don't know that he would actually receive any offers considering his injury status.

If a veteran like the special teams player Spillman was going to be out for a week or two with an injury, they could make him the 54th player. They could cut him for a week or two and then re-sign. He wouldn't miss any pay because his salary is guaranteed due to being a vested-veteran.

Keith Smith

12/18/13
- 2013 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST FIRST TEAM (COACHES/MEDIA): LB Keith Smith, Sr., San Jose State,...Smith is the 2013 national leader in tackles with his 159 stops and his 13.2 per game average. The 2013 co-captain becomes the second San Jose State player to receive first or second-team all-conference football honors four times. In 2012, Smith was a first-team All-Western Athletic Conference (WAC) choice. The 2010 WAC Freshman of the Year was a second-team All-WAC honoree that year and in 2011. (Offensive tackle Max Hooper (1978-81) was the first four-time all-conference football player at San Jose State.) - San Jose State football

07/22/13 - 2013 PRESEASON ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST FIRST TEAM (MEDIA): LB Keith Smith, Sr., San Jose State...A 2012 first-team All-WAC performer, he earned College Football Performance Awards' (CFPA) National Linebacker Performer of the Week for his 19 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles in last season's 20-14 win over BYU. - San Jose State football
07/18/13 - 2013 LOMBARDI AWARD WATCH LIST: LB Keith Smith, San Jose State...Smith, from Covina, Calif., is on the Watch List for the second year in a row. A 2012 first-team All-WAC performer, he earned College Football Performance Awards' (CFPA) National Linebacker Performer of the Week for his 19 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles in last season's 20-14 win over BYU. 12/07/12 - 2012 ALL-WAC FIRST TEAM (COACHES): LB-Keith Smith, San Jose State, 6-1, 229, Jr., has been selected First Team All-Western Athletic Conference (Coaches selection) for the 2012 college football season. - San Jose State football
11/19/12 - WEEK 12 WAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: San Jose State linebacker Keith Smith, a junior from Covina, Calif. (Charter Oak HS), tied a career-high with 19 tackles in San Jose State's 20-14 win over Brigham Young. He was also credited with two tackles for a loss 12 yards and two forced fumbles. His biggest play came as Brigham Young had the ball on San Jose State's 21-yard line late in the fourth quarter. Smith sacked the quarterback and forced a fumble that was recovered by the Spartans. San Jose State was able to run out the clock for their first win over the Cougars in four tries since 1968. Also nominated on defense: senior linebacker Solomon Randle, Louisiana Tech; sophomore free safety Triston Wade, UTSA; and junior linebacker Jake Doughty, Utah State. - WAC football

Sounds like a true LB to me with the will to stick his nose in on tackles. I'm excited to see him play.
