The Cowboys have some money left under the cap to add another player or two to the roster if a need arises but not for any more contact ext
In other words, a contract extension before the end of the season for Dez Bryant is unlikely no matter how well he plays

We got who we needed to extend this year already (Lee). Bryant would have been nice but we got plenty of time for that later.

Dez is not a FA until 2015 so they can look to next season to extend his contract.

Does this have any effect on if we decide to give Spencer a contract?

I doubt that. If they worked the deal right they could still sign Des- just have a minimal cap hit this year. But it is likely they will wait and keep that money just in case.

He's under contract next year anyway so a contract extension probably wouldn't happen til the offseason anyway

Without knowing the details of the Waters deal, it's hard to nail down the overall cap number. If it's around the 3m everyone is reporting, Hill is pretty close. They picked up a little room with the McCray salary cut and the Lissmore trade(though they added 1.2m in dead money for 2014), but they still have to count the full 53, the guys on the IR, PUP and Practice Squad. Either way, there is no need to do anything with Dez or TSmith until next year. They have to leave some space for injuries and replacements.

So what are the cap figures now? Was hoping they would be able to roll a nice chunk over to next years cap.

I'm not big on capology but if the contract is 1.5 and incentives are 3 mill what numbers is used in terms of the cap?

I think they have to leave room for the incentives. If they don't and he hits those marks, they would have 24 hours to get compliant or face some serious penalties.

Since they rolled over 2.3m from last year, that would be subtracted from any rollover amount for this year. In other words, they would have to be at least 2.3m under the cap to rollover anything over that amount. To me, getting Waters signed and Lee extended is worth losing any rollover.

Honestly, it can actually be a good thing that Jerry doesn't have the money to tempt him. The last in-season extensions where Ratliff's deal, Scandrick's, and the Sensabaugh extension that paid him $8 million for 1 year of service.

Shameful shameful stuff. Keep Jerry away from the checkbook from the end of training camp to the beginning of free agency.

I wish these guys would just learn to not say anything about the salary cap since they don't really understand it. There is a difference between the amount of cap money that the team has and the amount of space it can create.

But I don't expect them to create much space, if any, because I don't think they are in a hurry to extend anyone (Dez has another year on his deal). The only extension I think is possible this year is one for Dan Bailey, and they can do that without creating any more space.
