I
Kendrick Lamar.. (watch the video, can't post it... but it's dopeness)

I tried listening to his new album. I don't know what it is, but I can't get through a song because of his voice. I used to not mind his voice earlier in his career and even Good Kid, Mad City, but I just can't tolerate his voice anymore.

he uses a ton of cadences, some showing homage, some his own, some mocking others... and the overall theme of the album is pretty clear if you get to the end and listen to it linear, rather than just songs... plus his samples ring of soul music... good album in my opinion.

and its very different than "good kid"
he's an artist with a message... not just a rapper

Go a little fusion... strictly club music at the time ( although I was to young for the clubs back then)
Darn it, cats used to kill the dances to these tracks.

Snap
"Power"

I've been a mild fan since his earlier mix tapes. And I liked Good Kid, Mad City. To be honest, I was more of a fan of J Cole. I think he's a much better lyricist and rapper. Unfortunately, J Cole's albums have been garbage. When I heard Friday Night Lights, I thought he was gonna be the next legend. Kendrick, on the other hand, makes much better music and knows who he is as an artist. But I view Kendrick as more of a Lil Wayne. He knows how to make music and he has some skills on the mic. I just think his talent is vastly overrated. He's nowhere in the league of the all-time greats from a pure talent standpoint. And now I'm even getting annoyed with his voice. I like his regular rapping voice/style, but he's been getting too experimental and raspy and I just can't follow it anymore. But I might not be the right person to ask because I haven't been able to get into new music in a long time. The last time I heard a debut album from a new artist that I felt was an instant classic was College Dropout. I am dying to hear Jay Electronica's debut album though. Everything I hear from him is amazing. His skills as a rapper get overlooked, but I think he's amazing. His voice control, flow and amazing lyrics. Kinda reminds me of a less boring version of Guru. And I do like Lupe Fiasco. Can't get enough of the track Mural on his new album. It's 8 minutes of straight rapping, no chorus. Not for most people but that's the type of stuff I love. Been trying to give new rappers a chance (Childish Gambino, Tyler the Creator, Action Bronson, etc) but I just can't get into anything. I think I will give a listen to the new Run the Jewels (Killer Mike and El-P) album though. Anyway, I forgot what the point of my rant was. I guess I'm just getting older and I can't really get into new hip hop anymore. Even the "new" rapper that I really like (Jay Electronica) is 38 years old.

P.S. Just to add, so you know what kind of stuff I'm into. I can't get enough of anything from Black Thought. Unfortunately, he gets about 5 verses per Roots album.

I think Kendrick is very talented... I think j cole is boring, but a solid lyricist.
To each his own... I think KL is a very good lyricist... really good... And I like lyricist.... but again, to each his own...

Jay Electronica, keep waiting for an album.... he's very reminiscent to Killah Priest, his age shows in his work.. and that's not a bad thing, he's nice...
but he's outpacing this generation with his analogies...

The Last Roots album was beautiful... it was music,powerful..... It paid homage to their Manager, Rich Nichols, who passed away...When I heard Mercedes Martinez, his wife who he left behind sing on one of the tracks... it was tough to take... shout out to the Roots... Every Album they've ever made, dope, different, thoughtful.... They make music... I've embraced their change because they were always unique... I used to go to their shows when nobody knew who they were.....(they were the "square roots" time fly)

Trinity
(had to remove, not family friendly :/ but dice & black do tha thang)

Mercedes Martinez (not only did her husband pass, but he left her with an autistic son... strong woman, feel her pain)

If you want to hear some old school black thought, listen to the track with him joeybada$$, and Raekwon on static selektor's "Bird's Eye View"...Black kills that....

Props on that Bird's Eye View track. More proof that BT is the GOAT (IMO).

he's definitely super ill....

I was listening to the Kendrick album again today and I think I have a better idea of why his "voice" is throwing me off on this album. I don't know if you remember the debut Method Man album Tical, but the vocals were hella turned down for some reason and it really ruined the album. Anyway, I don't know if it's the vocals being low or just too much going on in the background, but lots of Kendrick's bars seemed a little flushed out on his new album. One of the things I've always loved about Black Thought is that his voice is an instrument. The raspy aggressiveness blends beautifully with any beat, and his flow is just so fluid and you can hear clearly every single syllable he spits. I find myself having too "listen" too closely to where Kendrick's bars hit instead of just sitting back and letting it come to me. I don't know if I'm crazy or what, but it's just how I've felt about this new album.
