I still don't understand how the Broncos were awarded the ball, but got it at the 10 yard line. It is either a fumble or an incomplete pass. If it was a fumble then it should have been the Chargers ball. If it was an incomplete pass then it should have been the Broncos ball at the 2 yard line. They essentially said it was both by saying it was a fumble with the Broncos getting an automatic recovery. Just strange.

I think his ruling was that it was actually a fumble before the whistle blew and not an incomplete pass, since the whistle was blown after the fumble but before the Charger's guy got the ball the play is immediately stopped and Broncos maintain possession at the point of the fumble.

I just don't see how that's feasible. The whistle signals to everybody to stop playing.

Exactly - that would be even worse. Players STOP PLAYING when the whistle is blown. You can't possibly judge anything after the whistle is blown.

It was ruled a fumble but the whistle blew the play dead - it was just a horrendous call. You don't blow the whistle with the ball loose.

He simply blew it, plain and simple.

After reviewing the play the ruling on the field was changed from an incomplete pass to a fumble. However, since the play had been whistled dead before any recovery was possible it meant that nobody recovered the ball.

The closest possible thing I can think of comparing it to would be if Cutler had fumbled it out of bounds. Since possession of the ball never changed Denver was awarded the ball.

Thats exactly what happened. The question remains, how does one blow a play dead when there is a fumbled football still in play? It makes NO SENSE.

Bottom line, Hoculi made a HUGE mistake blowing the whistle. Cost SD the game.

It's one of the worst calls I've ever seen and it would be getting a lot more attention in these parts had Dallas been on the receiving end of that ridiculous call.

The SD message boards must be lit up right now (and rightly so).

My question is.... why is Hochulis receiving all this grief, yet the ref who blew the whistle and signaled TD for Desean Jackson, when it was plain as day that DJ wasn't in the endzone when he threw the ball down, is not catching any heat?

Same thing.

Pre-emptive strike for the next time Hochuli refs our game. We can point fingers and talk about loved without lubrication.

Where was the make-up call? The refs knew they blew the game with the fumble. So, on the next play, just call offensive line holding. It ain't a secret, the refs can find holding on every play if they are looking for it.

Call a holding penalty on Denver after the fumble and the outcome would have been what it should have been. Hochuli is so stupid he couldn't even get the call right with instant replay or a make-up call.
