Holmgren Ready to Work Again

Former Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said he has made the decision that he wants to work again and is open to the idea of coaching, but has not made a final decision on whether he will do that or work in a front office somewhere. He said he has not thought through his emotions enough to know exactly what it is he wants to do.

Holmgren spoke with Les Carpenter of the Post last night at an event hosted by Washington Commanders Coach Jim Zorn and his wife Joy in the owner's lounge at FedEx Field. Holmgren is in Washington to see his wife Kathy and daughter Calla off on a trip to Uganda, where they will work in relief centers for the next few weeks helping refugees from Congo. The event was in support of the organization Kathy and Calla Holmgren will be working for: Medical Teams International

Holmgren laughed that on draft day he was supposed to be babysitting one of his grandchildren but kept sneaking peeks at the television. Soon he was talking to it, criticizing teams' moves. Finally Kathy Holmgren came in and reminded him that he wasn't working.

"I said, 'You're right. What am I doing?' " Mike Holmgren said.

Tick tock, Coach Phillips. Tick tock.

Did you happen to notice where the interview took place? And who he was guests of?

I would Imagine he was a guest of Zorn and not Snyder.

Well Jerry isn't going to change Wade Phillips out before the end of the coming season so unless Mike holds out until the end of the season then this would actually mean he'll likely be off the market for us at years end.

Which is fine with me cause I'd much rather Jerry simply do everything he can to land Cowher. That's a pipe dream, I know, but as long as it's my dream I'm going to dream it.

I would like to have Shanahan as well as long as he's got a good D coordinater.

Or Garrett. I think he'll be a fine HC.

Very Favre-like.

This is my final year of coaching.

Err.... for now.....

Maybe he can re-unite with Favre wherever he unretires-ers-ers-ers to.

Although I respect Holmgren, I have never been a fan of his type of teams. Coincidentally, I am not a big fan of the Midwest offense either.

Pass.

Sure he has success, but I don't like his game planning or schemes.

I'd rather have Cowher or even Shanahan. Perferably Cowher.

I don't believe Romo has had a good QB-minded coach since Lee.

Holmgren would certainly coach him up and get rid of those silly turnovers.

Same guy that coached the all time INT leader to a Super Bowl victory.

And he also took Matt Hassellhoff to the playoffs several times, that has got to be a testament to the man's coaching abilities.

Lets send Wade off to retirement with a Super Bowl Win...

Or a playoff win, he seems to have trouble in that department.

Same here. I really dislike WCO teams for some reason. I don't like most offensive-minded HCs, as a rule.

But like I've said since last year, I think he's the leading candidate to be our next HC. And I do respect him as a coach. Just please tell me Dave Campo won't be our DC.

BTW, I can't wait for Sarge to see this thread.

I feel the same way, I want my coach to be a defensive coach, although history shows that doesnt really matter.

The thing to worry about holmgren is his defense and his staff he puts together. It takes him forever to get it right or he never does. It would be all too convenient for holmgren to have a chat with jerry and then bam...campo is our coordinator and the defense is changed.

I like garrett and still hold hope he is the next head coach actually, continuity can be a good thing but we dont know what he would do defensively either.

And as far as the wco I dont like it that much either, but homlgren and shanahan still run the ball alot so I can deal with it. Holmgren still likes to throw the ball down the field and he uses tight ends and fullbacks really well.

Holmgren is a very likely match here as his personality is such that he doesn't have to be 100% in charge of personnel. He certainly has the skins on the wall to have Jerry's respect as well.

If he comes here it likely means that our O failed and Romo didn't perform well in 2009 - he would be here only if we really play like crap on O. A wholesale change to a WC offense would be what he'd want - not really a personnel issue -- you can do that with the guys we have for the most part -- the real issue I see is making a change like that for a coach who might not be around very long.

I do look forward to seeing Holmgren and Andy Reid meeting at midfield twice a year for a hug. That's going to look like two walruses fighting.

From a fit perspective, he's got to be considered a front-runner. Jones loves him and he might not ask for the control as he ended up divorcing from that in Seattle. Shanahan might, but I don't know if I could trust him to get a quality staff in place nearly as much as Holmgren. Gruden is the darkhorse as he appears to be interested, at least from his glowing comments on during the draft.

I would be extremely surprised if Cowher was anywhere close to a realistic consideration. He still would prefer an environment of control and he'd have to be fool thinking he would get it in Dallas. I'd be all for him, I don't believe he's a match with Mister Jones. At all.

Holmgren already has jerry's respect. They are friends. I imagine they respect each other the way parcells and jerry did.

I must say, it would be a sad day for me if the nfc east was run by reid, holmgren and zorn...A west coast offense division, this division is supposed to be about power running games, stopping the run kicking the other teams teeth in until they break their will. It is what it has always been.

I have to say it would be a bummer to see a bunch of sidways passes and the constant love affair with the west coast offense and Bill walsh. He was great, but I dont want my division looking like the niners!!!

it would really stink if the giants were the only team playing in the nfc east style.
