Texas has a great following, but it's not going to be a national channel like the big 10 network is. The lack of parity is the biggest problem with the big 12, and these types of top heavy business ventures will only worsen that problem.

Texas will become even richer, while teams like Iowa State fall further behind.

I think you're kinda missing the point here. The goal for Texas and really other schools interested in doing this in the Big 12, such as Oklahoma etc., is to eventually have their own TV deal, like Notre Dame. It's not about sinking money into a Conference Network, such as the Big 10. In fact, the Big 12 already has this kind of deal, where all the teams are represented. The deal with ESPN, as I understand it, is strictly a limited offer kinda of thing. It's an move where both Texas and ESPN can make money until such time as Texas actually has it's own Network and Channel deal worked out.

ESPN should just dedicate their entire channel to Cowboys, Rangers, and the Rose Bowl Champions: TCU. :laugh2:

I expect this when a team actually wins a NC and not the Rose Bowl.

Thanks for playing though. :laugh2:

True enough. However, I believe that one of the stipulations is that you actually have to have won one during the time ESPN was actually in existance.

ESPN has no say here. Only I do. Besides, you ask yourself, what is the best football team on the planet. Of course, the Cowboys are. The next best team? Thats right. TCU. ;)

Hook 'em! $300 million for 20 years.

http://www.espnmediazone3.com/us/2011/01/19/espn_texas_network_september/

The network will present more than 200 exclusive events each year, plus encore presentations of many games. Among the highlights:
  • Football: at least one exclusive game involving University of Texas each season plus encore presentations of Texas games originally on other networks (Note: for the 2011 season, ESPN will work within existing programming contracts to coordinate football game scheduling). In addition, the network will also showcase the annual practice scrimmage during the Texas Spring Football Jamboree.
  • Men’s Basketball: a minimum of eight exclusive games involving University of Texas each season plus encore presentations of Texas games originally on other networks
  • Women’s Basketball: exclusive games (every one available) and encore telecasts involving one of the nation’s most successful women’s programs
  • Olympic Sports: exclusive games (every one available) and encore presentations of University of Texas matchups in volleyball, soccer, baseball, softball, tennis, cross country, track and field, swimming and diving, golf and rowing.
Studio Coverage
ESPN expects to have an on-campus studio presence in Austin for the network. Studio programming is likely to include:
  • Pre- and post-game Programs: for various events, including every football game, every men’s basketball game, and many others
  • Coaches Shows: original programming with coaches for every University of Texas sport
  • Other Studio Programming: daily studio content showcasing breaking news, highlights, and more
Additional Original Sports Programming
The network will also be home to a range of original shows, series and experiences related to UT Athletics such as:
  • Season Previews/Reviews: for all University of Texas sports
  • Documentaries: biographies, student-athlete features and other storytelling-driven shows
  • Athletic Tradition: coverage of pep rallies, athletic awards presentations, tailgating, campus traditions, cheer and POM showcases and more
  • Misc: live radio shows, reports from the Athletic Directors, merchandise/memorabilia opportunities, etc.
Academic, Arts and Cultural Content
Fans can also expect to get a taste of non-athletic content relevant to The University of Texas on the network:
  • Academic: university news, commencement activities, lectures and visiting speakers
  • Culture/Arts: coverage of arts, music and theater events, including ones at UT as well as the surrounding Austin area to provide a flavor of the community
High School Coverage
ESPN will also create and operate a new, authenticated online/broadband site that will aspire to broadly aggregate content from around the state. It will provide fans, students and parents with access to extensive Texas high school sports, including football, basketball and more, through this centralized home.

I love how they pretend people will actually give a rat's behind about anything besides football and (men's) basketball. I just don't think this is a good idea. I don't see rebroadcasts of women's track and field being that much of a ratings bonanza. Am I the only one that sees this as a frightening conflict of interest on ESPN's part?

And where are all the people who always whine about how "greedy" Notre Dame is because they have a deal with NBC? Does that standard still apply?

I really hope another important Big 12 school gives the conference the finger and leaves in wake of this.

Be nice if TAMU grew some nuts and SECeded, but that's wishful thinking.

Why?
BTW, OU also has plans for a network.
I think it all depends on what kind of revenue sharing deal (if any) there is in place. Fact is the rights to broadcast the Big XII are going to be less valuable if they don't include as much of TX and OU exclusivity as they used to. The other 8 schools may be kinda pissed if they're not getting a big piece of the TX and OU pies.

If TX and OU each have their own networks and they are sharing the wealth with everyone, I think the conference is safe. If they're screwing over their conference-mates, then they may see those schools drop out.

If I was Okie State, TX A&M or Kansas, I'd be pretty upset not getting anything from TX's or OU's deals, and having to settle for 1/10th of what is going to be a significantly smaller package for the conference.

To me the most important school after Texas becomes Oklahoma but if it is true they are trying to get their own network too, I think then it becomes Kansas. Ya they stink at football but they are a perennial basketball power.
