You can run out of the spread, there are teams running the triple option out of it. But the way Texas tries to do it is out of an old school 2 minute drill type spread. There are small adjustments you could make and I don't know why GD doesn't. Also it's not all scheme, the line DOES suck, badly. They get utterly abused. Which goes to coaching because they are top recruits.
But back to scheme, for one they could just move the back to the side a little behind the qb as most teams do nowadays. Also run out of the pistol, so that backs are heading towards the los when they get the ball instead of at a standstill heading sideways.
